Letang and Malkin Score! But Not For Their Team...
During the game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Arizona Coyotes this past Monday, the Penguins scored a humiliating goal that has completely overtaken the Internet.
Early in the third period, the Coyotes were on a delayed penalty. At this point, the Penguins were losing 3-2. The Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry went to the bench to give the team a sixth skater as they attempted to play the advantage.
Kris Letang, in control of the puck in the Penguin's zone, attempted a pass to Evgeni Malkin, who was right behind him and in front of the net. Malkin mishandled the pass and, unable to stop the puck, directed it straight into his team's net.
So Much For Playing the Advantage
The goal got handed to the last Coyote who touched the puck, Lawson Crouse. As a result, the Coyotes took a two-goal lead.
The Penguins never recovered after this incident. In fact, the players showed little effort for the rest of the game. They ended up taking an embarrassing 5-2 loss.
Luckily for the Coyotes, however, this ended a losing streak to the Penguins that began back in 2017.
Letang or Malkin...Whose Fault?
Malkin clearly made a mistake by skating backward toward his team's net; however, Letang is ultimately the one to blame for this play. There is not one good reason to throw a drop pass around your own team's net when there is no goaltender present. Honestly, even with a goaltender there, these players should know that passing in front of your net is never a good idea.
These types of mistakes are ones that the team cannot afford. With the Penguins currently five games out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, they need to hope for a miracle to gain redemption.
