Major League Soccer Playoff Preview 2022-23

Is your favorite team in line for a Major League Soccer playoff spot this season?

The 2022-23 Major League Soccer season is heating up as they are making the final push towards the playoffs as most teams in the league have ten or less games remaining on their schedule for the season. The playoff race in both the eastern and western conference is tight at the moment as there are only seven spots for many deserving teams to find their way into the postseason. Due to the large amount of parity In Major League Soccer technically not a single team in the league is officially eliminated from playoff contention at the moment.

However, it is pretty obvious who is for real at this point and it is pretty obvious who has no shot at making the postseason unless a miraculous miracle were to occur over the course of these final nine matchdays. Overall it is Los Angeles that leads the way with a total of 57 points this season as they are absolutely tearing up the competition thus far. It is easy to see why as they have two of the most decorated European soccer stars on their team and Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini. While in the Eastern conference is the Philadelphia Union that’s at the top of the standings with 48 points.

While it is fair to say that the Western Conference is a little bit more separated in terms of points standings, the second, third and fourth spot in the Eastern conference is a tight race that is separated by only three points. At the moment the Montreal Impact, New York Red Bulls, and New York City FC are all fighting for that second seed in the East. It’ll be interesting to see how all three teams perform this weekend playing relatively weaker opponents. As they will all look for a win to stay afloat at the top of the Major League Soccer standings.

Major League Soccer Playoff Push

The middle and lower ends of both conferences are where it gets really packed in as the majority of the teams are all sitting equal on points. As the season winds down they will have to play each other as well which will certainly thin the herd a little bit but at the moment it is definitely hard to separate this large group of teams. Orlando, Miami, and Cincinnati all currently have 33 points and Charlotte is not far behind with 32. When you have Toronto and Chicago with 30 who could still make a late run into the postseason.

Out on the West Coast it is the exact same as four different teams currently have 33 points and there is only one playoff spot to fight for in that range. As the Galaxy, Vancouver, Nashville, and Portland all sit dead even while the Seattle Sounders are right behind them one point short of 33 with 32. You also can’t forget about the Colorado Rapids who currently have 31 points as well and could be another surprise team to sneak into the Major League Soccer playoffs late in the season. Truthfully at the moment there are only about five teams league wide that I would say are out of the playoffs at this point.

Regardless of what happens down the stretch we are certainly in for a huge finish to the 2022-23 Major League Soccer season and the Major League Soccer playoffs are going to be even more exciting because of it.
