Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban Reveals Klay Thompson's Intriguing Role With The Team

Dallas Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban has spoken about the possible on-court role of the team's marquee free-agent acquisition this summer, Klay Thompson.

The 34-year-old shooting guard left the Golden State Warriors this summer via a sign-and-trade transaction, signing a three-year deal worth $50 million to wear a different jersey for the first time in his NBA career.

Cuban noted that the Mavs struggled to score in the 2024 NBA Finals, particularly from open threes, and they plan to incorporate some of the Warriors' motion offense to integrate Thompson into their offense.

"But just standing in the corner, standing in the wings, and just catch and shoot from Luka [Doncic] and [Kyrie Irving]. Hopefully his life is going to be a lot easier, so we’ll be able to defend, make shots, & have a lot of depth," the 66-year-old businessman said on the Roommates Show podcast with New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson.

Thompson is widely regarded as one of the best three-point shooters of all-time, and he helped the Golden State Warriors win four NBA championships during his tenure in the Bay Area from 2011 to 2024.

Cuban was the Mavericks' majority owner from 2000 until December 2023, after selling 73 percent of the team to Las Vegas casino tycoon Miriam Adelson. His stake remains at 27 percent.

Mark Cuban Notes Western Conference Rival That Improved Heading Into The 2024-25 Season

Cuban also recognized that their rivals in the Western Conference have improved their rosters, specifically mentioning the Oklahoma City Thunder, who boosted their frontline by luring center Isaiah Hartenstein from the New York Knicks.

The rest of the Western Conference remains formidable, with the Denver Nuggets and reigning NBA Most Valuable Player Nikola Jokić posing a threat to the title. Other contenders include the Thunder with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Minnesota Timberwolves with Anthony Edwards.

The Dallas Mavericks reached the 2024 NBA Finals, defeating the top-seeded Thunder in the second round and the third-seeded Timberwolves in the Western Conference Finals.

The Mavs ultimately lost to the Boston Celtics in the championship round in five games.
