Michigan's New Defensive Coordinator Tells Us They Aren’t Messing Around

Michigan saw their head coach, Jim Harbaugh, pack his bags and head back to the NFL to be the head guy for the Los Angeles Chargers, and he took his bright young defensive coordinator, Jesse Minter, with him.

New Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore found Minter's replacement on Friday morning: former NFL defensive coordinator Wink Martindale.

After spending two years with the team, Martindale parted ways as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator this season.

Before joining the Giants in 2022, Martindale spent ten seasons with the Baltimore Ravens and was their defensive coordinator for four years.

While Martindale was in Baltimore, he had a young linebacker coach named Mike Macdonald, whom many Michigan fans should remember since he was Michigan's defensive coordinator in 2021. Then, he left to go back to Baltimore to take over for Martindale after he was let go from the team.

Michigan has been running Raven's style of defense the last few seasons, and now that trend will stay with the hiring of Martindale. This is an excellent hire for the team. They get to keep the same defense that all players are familiar with, and Moore gets to have a guy on his staff who has tons of experience in the NFL and could help guide him in his first real season as a college football head coach.

Michigan lost a lot this season from their head coach, assistant coaches, and players. I wouldn't be shocked if year one of Moore is a complete disaster.
