Mike Tomlin Needs To Follow Sean Payton's Footsteps
Current Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin is eliminated from the first round of the playoff once again, and this time, it feels a little different.
Tomlin is heading into the last year of his contract, and there is a chance he doesn't even see that last year in Pittsburgh.
Former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton decided to step down after the 2021 season, remaining under contract by the team. The Saints hired their defensive coordinator, Dennis Allen, as the head coach; Payton took a TV job for a year and then came back into coaching in 2023.
Since Payton was still under contract with the Saints, the Denver Broncos had to trade for him. Payton forced his hand to decide which team he wanted to go to since the Saints already had a head coach who took his place, which Tomlin should consider doing.
The Steelers are going nowhere with this current roster and quarterback situation, and even if they upgrade a quarterback, they still won't be able to beat Josh Allen, CJ Stroud, Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson.
Tomlin should step down from the Steelers and join a TV network for a season, force the Steelers to hire a new head coach, and then Tomlin can come out of the TV booth after next season and force the Steelers to trade him to the team he wants to coach.
Tomlin can pick from about six to seven jobs in 2025, and if he doesn't like any, he can wait another year and wait until one opens up he wants.
Tomlin is regarded as one of the best head coaches in the NFL, and many teams would want to hire him. Tomlin is still young, only turning 52 this March, so he has some time left.
This could also benefit the Steelers to finally part ways with Tomlin and find an offensive-minded head coach who can unleash an offense. Then, you can trade Tomlin in a year for a first-round pick.
This would be great for both parties involved, and the Steelers and Tomlin need a change of scenery.
