NFL Combine Defensive Winners
The top five defensive ends showcased their skills and demonstrated why they are all deserving of first-round grades. Chop Robinson, Dallas Turner, and Jared Verse were particularly impressed and are currently the talk of the combine in Indianapolis. This year's draft is also stacked with talented defensive backs, with both cornerbacks and safeties being deep positions.
Defensive End Winners
This year's draft is top-heavy on defensive ends. Chop Robinson, who weighs 254 pounds, caught everyone's attention at the NFL combine by running a 4.48 40-yard dash, despite his height. On the other hand, Dallas Turner ran a 4.46 40-yard dash and had a 10 feet 7 inches vertical jump. With a 9.49 RAS score, Dallas should be the first defensive end to be picked in the draft.
Jared Verse also had an impressive 9.53 RAS score and ran about a second slower 40-yard dash, with a time of 4.58 seconds. However, Jared's strength was evident in the weight room, where he put in 31 reps on the bench press. This is 5 more reps than any other defensive end, making him a valuable addition to any team.
Standout Defensive Backs
There are many talented defensive backs, but I want to start with Quinyon Mitchell, who has been rapidly climbing the draft boards. Mitchell's RAS(Relative Athletic Score) of 9.75 is impressive, especially since he ran the 40-yard dash in just 4.33 seconds.
What's even more remarkable to me is how fast he can backpedal. During the 43-degree reaction drill, Mitchell reached speeds that were among the fastest recorded for a cornerback. He was almost hitting 20 miles per hour. Mitchell's transitions are smooth and he looks like an ideal prospect for the cornerback position. When you watch Mitchell's tape, his skills in these drills translate to the field.
One of the standout performers at the combine was Cole Bishop, a defensive back from Utah who plays safety. He clocked a 4.45 forty, which was the third-fastest among safeties, and recorded a vertical jump of 39 inches, ranking him fifth among safeties. Bishop's Relative Athletic Score of 9.82 places him 19th out of 976 safeties since 1987.
One of my favorite corners in this draft is Khyree Jackson, who played at both Oregon and Alabama. Jackson stands at 6'4" and weighs 194 pounds, with an arm length of 32.75 inches. Although he didn't run the fastest 40, he had an impressive 10-yard split of 1.56 seconds. This indicates that he has the necessary burst and acceleration to excel as a corner in the NFL. Additionally, he placed third in the broad jump among corners with an impressive 11'1" jump.
Conclusion
These aren't the only guys who excelled at their position, but these are the guys I liked who had an exceptional combine. Let me know who you liked this weekend at the NFL combine.
