NFL Makes Controversial Changes To Regular Season
Over the last few years, the National Football League has made some big changes to its schedule. The first change was in 2020 when the league expanded its playoffs from 12 teams to 14 teams. This move allowed more teams to play in the postseason and made the league competitive for more teams, especially down the final stretch of the season.
In 2021, the league took a step further by adding another game to the schedule. With 17 games instead of 16, the regular season was extended and the Super Bowl was pushed back a week. These changes were seen as positive, as they benefited most teams and their fanbase.
The NFL has passed some new rule changes with mixed thoughts. While most people are upset over the league's new kickoff rules, which are heavily inspired by the XFL's kickoff format last year, this article will analyze two other important changes to the regular season.
NFL Moves Trade Deadline Back By A Week
The first change is that the league's trade deadline, which has been the eighth week of the season since 2012, has been moved back a week. The new Week Nine trade deadline will give teams a better idea of whether they should buy or sell and should make the deadline very competitive.
The last few years have been called "boring" by most fans as there has not been nearly as much action as the NHL and NBA's trade deadlines, which have featured blockbuster deals in recent years. The NFL is hoping that this change will increase player movement.
NFL Announces Brazil Game Will Be Peacock Exclusive
The second change is very unpopular. With the NFL playing its first game in Brazil, many fans are excited to see the first game in South America. But many people might miss out, as the league has announced that the Friday night game will be streamed exclusively on Peacock, NBC's premium streaming service.
Many fans voiced their displeasure after the Bills-Chargers game in late December was Peacock-exclusive. Now, many people are upset they will have to subscribe to another streaming service to watch the Eagles season opener against either the Cleveland Browns or Green Bay Packers.
With Thursday Night Football exclusive to Amazon Prime members and the confirmation that ESPN+ will stream an exclusive international game, NFL fans on cable must pay for an additional three services to watch exclusive games.
What do you think about these changes? Will these hurt or help the league?
