NFL Star Retires Just Months After Signing New Contract
Just two months after he signed a new contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, this former NFL star is calling it quits. Former Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots wide receiver DeVante Parker, known for his breakout 2019 season in Miami, has retired from the National Football League. The 31-year-old will retire after nine years in the league, where he played for three teams, with the majority of his time in Miami.
DeVante Parker Calls It A Career
Drafted with the 14th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Louisville, Parker failed to achieve a thousand-yard season during his first four years in Miami, mainly due to injuries. After missing eleven games in his first four seasons, Parker stayed healthy in 2019 and did not miss a single game. This would line up to be his most productive season in the NFL.
Despite the Dolphins finishing near the bottom of the league, Parker had a breakout season in 2019. The former Louisville Cardinal caught 72 balls for 1,202 yards and nine touchdowns, all career highs. Unfortunately, he would not be able to match his total from that season as he barely matched his 2019 yardage over the next two years.
2021 would come to be Parker's last season in Florida as he was traded to division rival New England Patriots. He wouldn't take long to find his mark as he had 156 receiving yards in his third game in New England. But after failing to reach the 600-yard mark in his two seasons in Foxborough, Parker was released on March 14th of this year.
The same day, he agreed to a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was expected to catch passes from Jalen Hurts and likely be the third or fourth target in Philly's offense. Instead, Parker retired on May 20th, just two months after signing with the Eagles. He has decided to spend more time with his family.
