Nick Castellanos Strikes Again After Joe Biden Drops Out Of Election
Nick Castellanos is a pretty well-known baseball player with 14 years of experience and two All-Star Game selections. Beyond his baseball accomplishments, though, he has become known for one thing in particular over the past few years. Time and time again, Castellanos has hit home runs at inopportune times.
On Sunday he once again did that.
Around 8 p.m. EST, President Joe Biden announced that he was dropping out as the democratic candidate for the 2024 election. At the same time, the Phillies were in the middle of its game against the Pirates, with Castellanos slotted fifth in the lineup.
Immediately after the Biden news dropped Twitter erupted, speculating that Castellanos would hit a home run. There’s technically no connection between the political news and Castellanos, but Castellanos has quite the history of going yard at unfortunate times.
Back on August 19 2020 the Reds, who Castellanos played for at the time, and the Royals faced off. The day prior, Reds play-by-play announcer Thom Brennaman made the mistake of using a homophobic slur, a blunder he needed to apologize for in the following game. With the Reds up to bat in the fifth inning, Brennaman attempted to issue an apology for his actions, but Castellanos disrupted it.
Still doing his job as a play-by-play announcer, Brennaman paused his apology to announce that there was “a drive into deep left field by Castellanos”, a stark shift from the serious apology he was issuing.
Castellanos’ unfortunate home run timing became a massive meme across MLB, given the adverse timing. Since 2020 the joke has ballooned, as Castellanos continues to go yard when bad news is unfolding.
Interrupting a eulogy for a World War II veteran, a 9/11 tribute video on air, an apology for the opposing coach getting a DUI, and the cancer announcement of his team’s owner are just a few examples of Castellanos’ unusual and unfortunate timing.
The pattern Castellanos has is ridiculous and unusual, but also oddly recurrent. It therefore wasn’t shocking that people quickly pondered the possibility of Castellanos hitting a home run in the wake of Biden’s announcement.
The outlook of Castellanos blasting a homer was so significant that Fanduel limited Castellanos’ bets.
For most of the Phillies’ game, it seemed like history wouldn’t repeat itself as Castellanos failed to homer in his first four at-bats. In the top of the ninth inning, though, Castellanos stepped into the box and did exactly what masses of people jokingly called. Castellanos hit a deep drive to left field.
What began as a viral meme is now an uncanny recurrence. There’s a reason so many people put money on a Castellanos home run Sunday. Castellanos has established one of the most perplexing patterns in baseball.
