NXT Battleground Makes History In Las Vegas.
This year's NXT Battleground, which was live from UFC Apex in Las Vegas, was historic and electric.
History Made At Battleground
In what was a historic Premium Live Event NXT Battleground took place at the UFC Apex in Vegas for the very first time. The NXT superstars did not shy away from the big stage of Sin City.
The night began with a thrilling 6-Woman Ladder Match for the brand-new NXT Women’s North American Championship. It was a back-and-forth match-up with all superstars having their moments to shine, but when the dust settled, it was Kelani Jordan who made history as the inaugural NXT Women’s North American Champion.
That was only the beginning of the festivities. We saw the NXT Tag Team Champions retain against a cocky veteran duo in The O.C. Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows.
In a nod to the venue hosting, for the first time ever NXT Underground took center stage on a PLE. Shayna Baszler took on Lola Vice who both have decorated MMA careers. After an epic battle, both superstars showed that MMA can be showcased in this world of professional wrestling. Lola Vice ended up securing the victory via Knockout over the veteran Baszler.
Next up was the Men’s NXT North American Championship Triple Threat Match between, the champion Oba Femi versus, Joe Coffey of Gallus, and fresh off a return from injury former NXT NA Champ, Wes Lee. Lee showed he hasn’t missed a beat since being injured, but a Gallus interruption and the raw unmuting strength of Femi weren’t enough to get the job done as Oba Femi retains his North American Championship.
More history was on tap for NXT as TNA Knockouts Champion Jordynne Grace took on NXT Women’s Champion The Prodigy Roxanne Perez. This would be the first time ever a TNA Knockouts Champion would compete for the belt. An outstanding match was weighed on by a lackluster ending which included interferences by Tatum Paxley, TNA Knockout, and former WWE Superstar Ash by Excellence (Dana Brooke). Overall the match hit exactly what it needed to. Hopefully leading to more NXT/ TNA crossover in the future.
This all led up to the main event for the NXT Championship. It featured fresh free agent All Ego Ethan Page and the leader of the “WHOOP THAT” Era, Trick Williams. Trick walked into yet another ELECTRIC arena screaming his trademark phrase “Whoop that Trick.” One of the more over superstars I have seen in NXT in a while. Showing that it’s not just hype Williams looked impressive in his victory. Handling everything that Page had to throw at him, even pulling out a few stops along the way.
A great night ended in another successful title defense for Williams, and the NXT flame for the future could not be brighter. Shawn Michaels has an outstanding eye for talent, and an uncanny ability to put them in positions to succeed. If this is what we have to look forward to I cannot wait until Heatwave in July.
