Ohio State Jaloni Cambridge Has Most Points For A Freshman

Jaloni Cambridge, Tre Johnson, Ohio State, Texas, Stadium Rant

The biggest story in college basketball, men's or women's, is the incoming freshman class. After a summer spent dominating NBA players, Duke freshman Cooper Flagg has Duke Blue Devil fans excited. Derik Queen posted a 20-20 game in his debut for the Maryland Terrapins. Neither player had the most points by a freshman basketball player this season.

That honor belongs to Ohio State Buckeye's freshman, Jaloni Cambridge. She was the second-ranked high school basketball player in the country last year according to ESPN, and lit up Cleveland State in the Buckeyes first game of the season. Cambridge finished the game with 31 points in 26 minutes (1.19 points per minute). She shot 12/14 from the field (86%) and 5/5 from the free throw line.

After Duke bounced Ohio State from the NCAA Women's tournament in March of last year, the Buckeyes went to work recruiting. They brought in three of ESPN's top 100 players, and Cambridge was the crown jewel of the group. The 5'7 guard averaged 20.7 points and 9.1 assists per game for Montverde Academy in Florida last year.

The nation's top high school player from a year ago, Sarah Strong, led UConn in scoring (17 points) in their opener against Boston University. Joyce Edwards (#3 recruit) scored 10 points in 29 minutes for South Carolina, Kateryna Koval (#4 recruit) had 18 points in 29 minutes for Notre Dame, and Syla Swords (#5 recruit) had 27 points in 36 minutes for Michigan.

2024-25 looks like it will be an amazing season in NCAA Women's basketball, and a few years after that, an amazing draft class for the WNBA. Make sure to tune in Tuesday, November 12 at 6pm, to see what Cambridge can do against Charlotte.

Highest Scoring Output For Men's College Hoops

The men's game saw a couple of decent scoring outputs from 2024-25 freshman. Texas Longhorns newcomer, and 5th-ranked high school recruit Tre Johnson had 29 points in 39 minutes (0.74 points per minute), as the Longhorns fell to Ohio State 80-72. In the Ivy League, Harvard freshman Robert Hinton dropped 27 points in 32 minutes (0.84 points per minute) in a win over Marist.
