Ohio State Seems To Be Striking Out In The QB Transfer Portal
Ohio State is preparing for the Cotton Bowl against Missouri at the end of the month, and at the same time, they are trying to get ready for the 2024 season.
It was believed that Ohio State would look in the transfer portal to find their 2024 starting quarterback but, at the very least, bring in a guy that could compete with the current room.
Ohio State's current quarterbacks, Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, and Class of 2024 star Air Noland, are expected to be the three competing for the 2024 job, with no clear-cut transfers coming in.
Brown will start the Cotton Bowl and likely be the starter when spring ball starts in 2024, but it will be a long quarterback competition.
The Buckeyes have not been significant players in this quarterback transfer portal, and many of the top guys have committed somewhere else or have yet to be linked to Ohio State.
Top Guys On The Move
On Tuesday, former Duke quarterback Riley Leonard, whom Ohio State was interested in, committed to playing his 2024 ball at Notre Dame.
Washington State's Cam Ward was a name floating around last week that Ohio State could be going after is ranked third according to 247sports.com in this year's quarterback portal. It seems he has no contact with the Buckeyes, and as of right now, he is crystal balled to head to Miami.
UCLA's true freshman Dante Moore might be the last resort for Ohio State if they want to land one of these transfer quarterbacks. Moore is highly regarded as the best transfer portal quarterback this season, and I wouldn't put it past Ryan Day to try and land him.
Day went out and landed Justin Fields, the best transfer portal quarterback for the 2019 season, and Fields became a star for the Buckeyes.
Moore was born in Ohio but moved to Michigan, where he played high school football.
Moore was committed to Oregon before deciding to go to UCLA, so that could be a spot for him to land even though they just signed Gabriel.
Michigan is another destination for Moore, and it is an authentic possibility he will head back home to take over for J.J. McCarthy, who could be heading to the NFL next season.
Ohio State could still get a middle-of-the-road quarterback in the portal to compete, but the reality of people thinking they were going to land a star at the position is ending.
It is fitting that Ohio State does not land a quarterback in the portal.
The Buckeyes have enough talent in the room, and it most likely will be Brown or Kienholz who starts in 2024. They were both highly regarded coming out of high school, and Kienholz could be a legit star if he develops right through the spring and fall camp.
Kienholz was a true freshman this season, so he was never going to be able to start, but he was a four-star for a reason, and just watching his high school tape, you can see how much arm talent and how great of an athlete he is.
I wouldn't worry if Ohio State doesn't land a quarterback in the portal. There is enough talent in that room, and you have to give Ryan Day the benefit of the doubt with what he has been able to do with quarterbacks. He did well with McCord, who probably reached his ceiling under Day.
