Packers Collapse Against Gang Green In Week Six Matchup
The Green Bay Packers hosted the New York Jets after falling short to the New York Giants the week before. The Jets get an ugly win and Green Bay ends up with an ugly loss.
The New York Jets traveled to Lambeau Field to play the Green Bay Packers as 7.5-point underdogs. Well, the Packers handed the Jets the win on a silver platter as they walked away with a 27-10 win. Under head coach Matt LaFleur, anytime the Packers lost a game, they were 10-0 the next game. That streak has now ended as the Packers have now lost back-to-back games against teams that haven’t been good in years but are both finding success this season.
Packers Offense Versus Jets Defense
Outside of wide receiver Allen Lazard and tight end Robert Tonyan, there wasn’t much offense to be found in the lopsided loss. The Jets’ head coach Robert Saleh is a defensive-minded coach and made sure that his squad was ready for the Packers. Jets rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner blanketed Packers rookie wide receiver Romeo Doubs for most of the game. Doubs has been a bright spot for the Packers this season but he was unable to gain much separation from Gardner so quarterback Aaron Rodgers was forced to go elsewhere.
Whatever the game plan was, it’s obvious that the Packers running backs were not included. It’s unclear why the running backs weren’t used much but that hindered the offense heavily and will be a subject to talk about this week during practice. The Jets’ defense held Green Bay’s offense to 60 rushing yards and 218 passing yards. The offensive line for the Packers was a mess and is a key reason why Rodgers was under duress for most of the game. Robert Tonyan and Allen Lazard combined for 21 targets, 14 receptions, 166 yards, and one touchdown. Outside of these two, there wasn’t much.

Jets Offense Versus Packers Defense
The Packers’ defense continues to be sliced and diced in the rushing game. Rookie running back Breece Hall had a heyday against Green Bay. Breece had 116 rush yards plus a touchdown on 20 rushes. Backup running back Michael Carter also found success as he rushed six times for 41 yards. Opposite to the Packers’ offense and Jets’ defense, the Packers defense held the Jets to 99 passing yards but allowed 179 yards through the air.
Leading up to the game, Green Bay’s defensive coordinator Joe Barry told the media that cornerback Jaire Alexander will be a lot more aggressive in the game. Alexander traveled everywhere on the field with rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson and almost came up with two interceptions in the game. Alexander only allowed one catch for eight yards as Wilson was targeted five times but could only come down with one reception. It’s nice to see that Barry is willing to adjust his game plan when a player voices his concerns about the playcalling. Alexander should continue to play in man coverage against the top wideout for each team.
What The Packers Learned After Week Six Loss To The Jets
The rush defense is still an issue and there may be some personnel changes coming over the next couple of weeks to help fix it. The offensive line went from decent to awful. Prior to Week six, there had been some chatter about putting the best five linemen on the field at once but that obviously didn’t happen because Royce Newman started the game. With Bakhtiari playing more, the thought was for Yosh Nijman to move to right tackle and move Elgton Jenkins to the guard spot that he excels at.
Receivers aren’t gaining separation and continue to get banged up. Entering the game, Green Bay was without Sammy Watkins who is on injured reserve, and rookie Christian Watson who has been dealing with a hamstring injury. During the game, Randall Cobb limped off the field and was last seen in tears as he took the cart to the locker room. If the Packers want to have a shot at playoffs for what might be Aaron Rodgers last year, the front office needs to go out and find talent to generate some wins.
