Packers Linked To Another Veteran Wide Receiver

The Green Bay Packers have already been linked to a handful of different wide receivers from various teams but no moves have happened yet. What style of wide receiver will the Packers target?

It seems like every few days the Packers have trending news regarding a different receiver in hopes that something actually happens. In recent years, Green Bay has not been the team to trade for players to help the team but rather trusts the players that they’ve developed. Free agency in the offseason is a no-go for the Packers but during the season, free agency is active for the team as practice squad players are added and released.

A.J. Green, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Even at the age of 34, A.J. Green is still on the field catching the football. Although not ideal, A.J. Green has been tagged as a potential landing spot for the Packers. Green would definitely be cheap and a veteran that can adapt to a new playbook quickly but is he what Green Bay wants and needs? Green Bay has been linked to a plethora of young talent as the November 1st trade deadline approaches but Green is by far the oldest of the group.

The Arizona Cardinals have already mentioned that they don’t know what Green’s role will be moving forward after the return of star wideout DeAndre Hopkins. Hopkins is a focal point for the Cardinals and won’t leave many targets for Green in the air raid offense led by head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Green has now dropped to fourth on the depth chart and will be a depth wide receiver for the team but if they can get a late-round draft pick for him, would they be interested in moving Green? This might be Green’s last year before retirement, an opportunity to play with Aaron Rodgers might be on his bucket list.

Where The Packers Front Office Stands

Over the last few days, the Packers’ front office has announced that they are indeed shopping around for a wide receiver. They announced that they would prefer a young wide receiver that is still on a rookie deal. Jerry Jeudy for the Broncos, Elijah Moore for the New York Jets, and Chase Claypool for the Pittsburgh Steelers all fit that description. These three wide receivers have already been linked to the Packers over the last couple of weeks but according to the Broncos, they have no interest in trading Jeudy.

Elijah Moore recently came out and requested a trade due to his lack of involvement in the offense. He was held out of Week seven by head coach Robert Saleh because his head wasn’t in the right place but Saleh said that he’d rather not trade the second-year wideout as he’s important to the organization. A second or third-round pick and Amari Rodgers might be enough to change their opinion though.

The Packers currently have just over $6 million in cap space so they have the funds to acquire at least one receiver. Another piece on the offensive line might be a trade topic as well but there hasn’t been much buzz around that position. Green Bay has been playing around with the offensive line and moving guys, they have the skill, just need to fit the puzzle pieces together the right way. Injuries definitely haven’t helped similar to the wide receiver position. With seven days left before the trade deadline, will the Packers make a move?
