Packers Week Two Game Recap: 27-10 Win Versus Chicago
The Packers once again take down their greatest rival on Sunday Night Football.
After a very disappointing blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week, the Packers proved that they are still a pretty good football team once again by dominating the Chicago Bears. Aaron Rodgers threw two touchdown passes and Aaron Jones averaged 8.8 yards per carry leading to a 132-yard performance. Bears quarterback Justin Fields was held to 70 passing yards despite running back David Montgomery’s stellar day on the ground.
Packers & Bears First Drive
A mix of passing and running, the Packers’ offense started out strong but was stopped after a false start and a sack set them back. After kicker Mason Crosby’s 40-yard field goal, the Bears reintroduced an old friend as former Packer Equanimeous St. Brown beat elite cornerback Jaire Alexander on a 30-yard gain and Fields took it in himself for the touchdown and the Bears had a 7-3 lead. But after the Bears looked confident, Aaron Rodgers was just warming up.
Packers & Bears Second Drive
On the next drive, the Packers running game started clicking and the offensive line gave up no sacks as Aaron Jones’s 15-yard run put Green Bay up 10-7. A big 24-yard catch by Sammy Watkins fueled the drive. If old man momentum hadn’t switched sides yet, you would have noticed on this drive. The Packer defense was lights out as Preston Smith sacked Fields for a loss of nine yards and Rasul Douglas with a big play in the backfield sending receiver Darnell Mooney nowhere on the short pass.
Packers Score Twice In The Second Quarter
Midway through the second quarter, Green Bay extended its lead with a run-heavy drive along with a big 20-yard play by Romeo Doubs and a Rodgers toss-pass to Jones for the second touchdown of the day for the running back. After a scare, Amari Rodgers fumbled the ball on a punt return but it was recovered by Green Bay. Aaron Jones and Randall Cobb came up with key plays on the drive and finally, it was the return of the Lizard King. Allen Lazard, making his season debut from injury, caught a 5-yard touchdown and the Packers led 24-7 at halftime.
Packers Offensive Miscue
Another strong drive by Green Bay ended unfortunately due to a mistake in the backfield. As the Packers were threatening, Rodgers and AJ Dillon weren’t on the same page as the fumble resulted in the Bears’ ball. Chicago finally got its first, first down since the first quarter. It included a big play by 10-year veteran receiver Ryan Griffin, an 18-yard deep pass. The Bears tacked on a field goal to cut the lead to 14.
Packers Versus Bears: Fourth Quarter
Into the fourth quarter, a drive where David Montgomery had over 45 rushing yards, the biggest moment came when Justin Fields tried to QB sneak into the endzone but was stopped just short. This turned out to be a controversial play of whether the ball crossed the goal line. Chicago came away with nothing and despite being in awful field position, the Packers drove all the way down the field and added three more. Sammy Watkins had his biggest reception as a Packer, the 55-yard reception on second down.
Finally, just as I predicted, Jaire Alexander intercepted Fields; that was all she wrote for this one. Aaron Rodgers owned the Bears once again and a heavy running game turned out to be a good one, for anyone not living in Chicago. Now the Green Bay Packers (1-1) can celebrate the win but prepare hard for their most formidable opponent yet, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-0). This game will be played on Sunday, September 25th at 4:25 pm on FOX’s Game of the Week. Meanwhile, Chicago Bears (1-1) look to get above .500 again when they take on the Houston Texans (0-1-1) at 1:00 pm next week on CBS.
