Panthers News – Breaking Down The Disgruntled Robbie Anderson Trade

With the news reported Monday that disgruntled Panthers WR Robbie Anderson had been traded to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for late round picks in 2024 & 2025, we take a look at what led to this trade and what next for the Panthers.

What Led To The Panthers Trading Anderson?

During the Week 6 matchup there was multiple clips showing then Panthers WR Robbie Anderson getting in the face of wide receiver coach Joe Dailey. Why was Robbie so upset at Daisy?

It is widely speculated to be because Anderson is unhappy with the amount of targets he was being given and the fact Anderson wasn’t in the game on a critical third down. So far in the 2022 NFL season Anderson has 13 receptions for 206 yards and one touchdown.

What is Robbie’s New Role going to be with the Cardinals?

Anderson is going into a wide receiver group that already has DeAndre Hopkins, A.J Green, Rondale Moore, and Marquise Brown. Brown is now believed to be out for a while with a non-surgical fracture in his foot. So Anderson will likely take the place of Brown’s production until he gets back.

With Brown now injured, this is the perfect opportunity for Anderson to take the role as the Cardinals deep threat receiver, something he has forged a reputation for since entering the league.

Who is going to replace Robbie Anderson’s production in Carolina?

After the trade news was announced the big question became: Who is going to replace Anderson’s production? Although D.J Moore seems like the obvious candidate, who in the first six games of the season who has almost matched Robbie’s production in yards, and has already surpassed him in terms of receptions.

A wide receiver that could surprise people and take Anderson’s spot in production is Laviska Shenault. Shenault was traded to Carolina from the Jacksonville Jaguars at the start of the season. In the first six games of the season Laviska has 2 receptions for 90 yards. It also to note he has not been healthy for all six games but, when he is on the field he’s a difference maker. As we saw with his first reception as a Panther.

There will also be opportunities for guys like Shi Smith and Terrace Marshall JR. Smith has been the Panthers starting slot receiver to open the season, but has struggled to replicate his preseason production. Marshall JR, the Panthers second-round pick in 2021 was a breakout candidate for many heading into the season but struggled to find rhythm under Matt Rhule, the former LSU man could now be set for a bigger impact.

Looking to the practice squad if injuries hit, expect to see Preston Williams the former Miami Dolphin under consideration, or Derek Wright or CJ Saunders, two players who impressed during camp and preseason.
