Patriots Should Pursue This Three-Time Pro Bowler

Updated: Sep 10, 2023

Due to cap concerns, there is a good possibility that the Los Angeles Chargers may cut Keenan Allen. Allen is a former Pro Bowler and still has good years ahead of him. Should the Patriots make an aggressive push to sign the star receiver?

The Talent The Patriots Need

Under Matt Patricia, the Patriots offense struggled significantly. New England had poor play-calling, and they didn’t have elite talent on offense to overcome bad coaching. This caused an overall regression as a whole. Mac Jones finished with less than 3,000 yards and with 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

The leading receiver for New England was Jakobi Meyers with 804 yards. Simply put, the Patriots just need more production from their passing game. With Bill O’Brien calling plays, New England should see a healthy increase in their offensive production. However, to be a true Super Bowl contender, the Patriots will need to make an aggressive effort to sign Keenan Allen.

What Keenan Allen Provides

The Patriots would finally be able to solve their receiver issue if they added Keenan Allen. For over three seasons now they haven’t had a truly elite receiver opposing defenses need to double-team. Allen is consistently elite, and he would help give Mac Jones a reliable target. Keenan Allen is one of the best route-runners in the entire NFL, and he was able to produce throughout his whole career. Allen has five seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards and he has four seasons with over 600 receiving yards. When healthy, Allen is one of the best receivers in the game.

Allen has averaged over 70 yards per game since 2017, and he has 33 games with over 100 yards receiving. All of these statistics show that Allen is an elite receiver in the NFL and that New England should make a push to sign the former Pro Bowler.

Mac Jones’ Development

Mac Jones showed a lot of promise in year one throwing for over 3,800 yards and 22 touchdowns. In year two Mac Jones regressed and only threw for 14 touchdowns. With the Patriots getting a more qualified offensive coordinator in Bill O’Brien, acquiring Keenan Allen would be the most beneficial to Mac Jones. A quarterback needs good talent around them to succeed, and New England hasn’t done a great job surrounding Mac Jones with good pieces.

With already getting a prolific offensive coordinator, getting one of the best receivers in the game will allow the Patriots to evaluate Mac Jones truly. New England can see if he is the quarterback who can lead them to the Super Bowl. New England also needs more talent on offense to compete with the elite teams in the AFC like the Bengals, Chiefs, and Bills. Getting Keenan Allen would do wonders for Mac Jones and the offense as a whole.
