Philadelphia Eagles Acquire Former First Round NFL Draft Pick
The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to be Super Bowl contenders in 2024. While the team has a very talented roster, the team has been searching for a third wide receiver behind A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. After signing former Miami Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker to a deal back in March, Parker retired last week in order to spend time with his family. Leaving a hole in the wide receiver depth, the Eagles have added another wide receiver to the mix.
The Eagles have signed former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver John Ross III to a one-year contract. The 28-year-old was drafted ninth overall in the 2017 NFL Draft out of Washington. At the time of his combine, Ross held the fastest 40-yard dash time in NFL history, which was surpassed by 2024 first-round pick Xavier Worthy. While he was a very hyped prospect, he hasn't lived up to his draft position. Now he has the chance to turn his career around.

After a disappointing rookie season, which saw John Ross only play in three games with only one rush for 12 yards, Ross saw his role increase over the next two seasons, where he caught 49 receptions for 716 yards and ten touchdowns. He requested a trade in 2020 after only playing in three games despite being healthy most of the season.
He last played in the league back in 2021 with the New York Giants. After finishing the year with 224 yards and a touchdown, Ross did not re-sign with New York and was out of the league during the 2022 season. He signed with Kansas City in 2023 but retired a few months later and never played a snap with the Chiefs.
Ross will replace the speedy Quez Watkins, who had over 1,200 receiving yards in his four years with the Eagles, and look to give quarterback Jalen Hurts a new deep threat option. This is a good signing for Philadelphia and will give the former Bengal a chance to compete this summer for a roster spot.
