Breaking Down Phillies' Franchise Record Seven All-Stars

When the National League takes the field for the 2024 All-Star Game, three Phillies players will take the field. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for the Phillies. Four Phillies pitchers will join Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Alec Bohm in Texas, bringing the number of Phillies All-Stars to seven.

To put into perspective how impressive having seven All-Stars is, no other team has more than five All-Stars. The Phillies’ seven All-Stars also eclipsed the franchise record. Before this year, five players were the Phillies' most sent to an All-Star game.

All-Star Starters

Harper, Turner, and Bohm have all had impressive seasons thus far, earning themselves spots on the NL All-Star Game starting lineup.

Starting at first base, Harper is living up to his MVP status, playing at that level through the first half of the season. With a 3.9 WAR and a .981 OPS — second in the NL — Harper has been lethal at the plate, to say the least. He earned NL Player of the Month honors in both May and June. Although he recently was placed on the injured list with a hamstring injury, he will return this week, leaving plenty of time to play in the All-Star Game.

After a strong start, Turner spent over a month on the injured list following a significant hamstring injury. But since his return, he’s wasted no time playing at the same elite level he was at pre-injury. With an impressive .879 OPS, he’s earned his spot as the starting shortstop for the NL.

Bohm has arguably been the Phillies’ most consistent player this season. He has the second most RBIs in the NL with 70 and has been clutch all season. Bohm has an OPS of 1.006 with runners in scoring position and an even more impressive 1.186 OPS with runners in scoring position with two outs. He should be a valuable piece in the All-Star game regardless of if he steps up to the plate with the bases filled in his first All-Star Game.

All-Star Pitchers

In addition to the three Phillies starters, four pitchers were selected to the All-Star Game. Starters Ranger Suarez, Zack Wheeler, and relievers Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman will make their way to Texas next week.

Depending on when Suarez makes his final start before the All-Star break, he has a good chance of starting the All-Star Game for the NL. Although he has struggled slightly in his last two starts he is second in baseball with ten wins and has a profound 1.02 WHIP.

Just like Suarez, Wheeler has been lethal from the bump this year. He also has ten wins so far and has had quality starts in eight of the last nine games he has pitched. His 2.74 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 119 strikeouts have been crucial for the Phillies, making him well worth the All-Star bid.

It’s not typical for a team to send two relievers to the All-Star Game. After all, only five relievers make the team. But that’s just a testament to Strahm and Hoffman's dominance this season. Strahm and Hoffman have been phenomenal out of the bullpen, with 0.82 and 0.88 WHIPs, respectively. The two have given up a combined 11 earned runs in 71.1 innings.
