Predicting The NBA Rookie Of The Year Finalists For The 2024-2025 NBA Season

The 2024 NBA Draft class was one of the most underhyped draft classes in recent history, with no truly “high-profile” prospects on the board. Regardless, we know that hype doesn’t mean all that much in terms of how the prospect’s talent translates to the league, and if anything, lesser-known prospects often surprise us.

As the 2024-2025 season kicks off, the race for Rookie of the Year (ROY) is set to be highly competitive. Here’s a look at the top five candidates, focusing on Zaccharie Risacher, Reed Sheppard, and Alexandre Sarr, who are poised to make a strong case for the award.

1. Zaccharie Risacher (Atlanta Hawks)

Zaccharie Risacher has quickly proven why the Atlanta Hawks selected him as the No. 1 pick. The 6’8” forward is incredibly versatile and can impact the game on both ends. In his preseason debut, he showcased his offensive repertoire, scoring 18 points and hitting multiple three-pointers while displaying impressive court vision with creative assists.

Risacher’s ability to shoot, handle the ball, and defend makes him a unique asset, and playing alongside Trae Young will give him plenty of scoring opportunities. He’s a strong favorite for the ROY award if he can maintain his preseason form.

2. Reed Sheppard (Houston Rockets)

Reed Sheppard, a standout guard for the Houston Rockets, is another top contender for the ROY award. Known for his shooting accuracy and defensive hustle, Sheppard’s ability to play off the ball makes him an ideal fit next to Jalen Green and Alperen Şengün. His quick release from beyond the arc and high basketball IQ are standout qualities that could allow him to fill a vital role for the Rockets.

If Sheppard continues to showcase his ability to score efficiently and make smart defensive plays, he could emerge as one of the more surprising candidates for Rookie of the Year.

3. Alexandre Sarr (Washington Wizards)

Alexandre Sarr, a versatile 7-footer for the Washington Wizards, has the tools to become a dominant force in the NBA. Sarr is known for his elite shot-blocking ability, mobility, and growing offensive skill set. In the Wizards' rebuild, Sarr will be able to develop alongside other young talents and may immediately see significant minutes.

His combination of rim protection and a developing offensive game could allow him to rack up both defensive stats and points, giving him a strong case for ROY contention. Sarr could be one of the most impactful rookies defensively with his size and agility.

4. Ron Holland (Detroit Pistons)

Ron Holland, selected by the Detroit Pistons, is known for his high motor and athleticism. His defensive versatility and ability to guard multiple positions will make him a key contributor to the Pistons' young core. With Cade Cunningham and Jaden Ivey leading the backcourt, Holland won’t need to shoulder too much offensive responsibility but will be a key piece on both ends of the floor.

If Holland can develop a consistent jump shot to complement his defensive prowess, he could have a strong rookie season that puts him in the conversation for Rookie of the Year.

5. Matas Buzelis (Chicago Bulls)

Matas Buzelis, standing at 6’10” with a unique blend of shooting, ball-handling, and playmaking, joins the Chicago Bulls as one of the most intriguing rookies. His size and skill make him a tough matchup for defenders, and his versatility could allow him to fill multiple roles for the Bulls. Playing alongside veterans like Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan could provide Buzelis with the mentorship and structure he needs to excel.

If Buzelis can contribute as a scorer and playmaker while improving his defensive game, he could be a dark horse candidate for Rookie of the Year.

Ultimately Though

Zaccharie Risacher stands out as the most complete and NBA-ready player. His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, combined with his strong preseason showing, suggests he has the best chance to win the award. Risacher’s versatility—scoring from deep, making smart passes, and defending multiple positions—makes him a crucial part of the Hawks’ future plans.

With Atlanta expected to rely on him as a primary offensive option alongside Trae Young, Risacher should see ample playing time and opportunities to fill the stat sheet. His ability to contribute across various categories makes him an ideal candidate to win Rookie of the Year.

Projected Stats for 2024-2025:

  • Points per game: 16-18

  • Rebounds per game: 5-7

  • Assists per game: 3-4

  • Steals per game: 1.2

  • Blocks per game: 1.0

  • Field goal percentage: 45-48%

  • Three-point percentage: 37-39%

These numbers would place Risacher among the top-performing rookies in the league, solidifying his case as the Rookie of the Year. His consistent scoring, solid defense, and high basketball IQ give him a clear edge over the competition. If he lives up to his potential, Zaccharie Risacher will be the breakout star of the 2024-2025 NBA season.
