Ranking Every Running Back Room In The NFC East
The quarterback rankings have passed, and it's time for the bellcows. While the NFL has become much more of a pass-heavy league, dominated by quarterback play and wide receiver talent, there is still plenty of running back desire. While maybe not as typical as Christian McCaffrey, who is a receiving back, talented runningbacks are still incredible and crucial to a team's success. Beginning with the NFC East, which teams have the best running back rooms in their divisions?
4) Dallas Cowboys
A few years ago, Ezekiel Elliott was the best running back in the NFL. Tony Pollard, backing him up, always seemed poised for a breakout as a big name. This aforementioned breakout never really came for Pollard, and now Dallas has just been left with the raggedy bones of a well-aged and bruised Elliott. Dallas' offensive line is still solid and could provide some good blocking for a few decent games, but a running back room led by Elliott and Rico Dowdle deserves nowhere else than dead last. Maybe the Cowboys would be higher if the year was 2017.
3) New York Giants
While the Giants did lose All-Pro Saquon Barkley in free agency, they did a good job of replacing him with Devin Singletary from Houston. Singletary has consistently shown flashes throughout his career but has never been trusted with the reins as the number-one back in an offense. After a solid year with Houston, totaling over a thousand yards, New York gave him that opportunity. With solid backups in Eric Gray from Oklahoma and rookie Tyrone Tracy from Purdue behind him, the Giants narrowly edge out the Cowboys for the third slot.
2) Washington Commanders
While an aged Autin Ekeler might not be better than the Giants' running back situation, backup Brian Robinson gives Washington a lethal duo in the backfield. Ekeler excelled for years in Los Angeles as one of the best-receiving backs in the NFL for the Chargers, while Robinson burst onto the scene last year wearing a massive hat and putting up even bigger numbers. With rookie Jayden Daniels taking over the Commanders' offense, expect him to rely on this duo a fair amount and expect them to show up.
1) Philadelphia Eagles
While it's a shame that he never got to run behind Jason Kelce, new Eagle Saquon Barkley joins one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. The Eagles stole Barkley away from their in-division rivals in New York, and now they have the best-running back room in the division. Besides the All-Pro Barkley leading the charge, Philadelphia has Memphis product Kenneth Gainwell backing him up. While Gainwell hasn't become a household name, his receiving prowess as a young back shows much promise. The Eagles have run the NFC East for the past few seasons, and with as good of a running back room as this, it's unlikely that stops this year.
