Ranking The Starting NFC East Quarterbacks: Post Carson Wentz Trade
The NFC East just regained a familiar face in Carson Wentz. After one season with the Indianapolis Colts, Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders. The trade details are Wentz goes to Washington and the Colts get draft picks in return. With Wentz back in the NFC East, the quarterback competition is likely to be better, sort of.
Wentz spent the first five seasons of his career in Philly with the Eagles. Since his departure, this division has become one quarterback’s turf and that is Dak Prescott. With Wentz back, the big question is what are the rankings for starting QBs in the NFC East? Let’s break it down, shall we?
1.) Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys: 54-35 record as a starter
The NFC East is Dak Prescott’s division right now. Since his rookie year in 2016, Prescott is 25-6 versus the NFC East. Of Prescott’s 22,083 career passing yards, he has accumulated 7,703 against NFC East opponents. Prescott also has 55 touchdowns against the East out of his 143 career touchdowns.
In 2021, most would consider Prescott as having a down year. But if a down year for Prescott is throwing for 4,449-yards passing, 37 touchdowns, and just 10 interceptions, Dallas is happy. While Prescott has yet to lead Dallas far in the playoffs, he is still the most productive and efficient QB in the division and it is not even close.
2.) Carson Wentz, Washington Commanders: 44-40-1 record as a starter
As much as I want to put Jalen hurts here, Wentz has a better resume in the NFC East. Wentz played for the Eagles from 2016 to 2020 and went 16-9 as a starter. Wentz accumulated 6,446 yards and 42 touchdowns as an Eagle. His biggest downfall was not stepping up in the big moments for Philly. It also hurt his chances when Nick Foles led Philly to a Super Bowl victory while Wentz was injured.
In his single season as the Colts starter, Wentz had 3,563 passing yards, 27 touchdowns, seven interceptions, and a 62.4% completion rate. While the Colts lost far too many close games, Wentz showed he is still capable of playing well. His overall success puts him above Jalen hurts here for me. I might be crazy but oh well.
3.) Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles: 9-10 record as a starter
Coming in at number three we have the young talent of Jalen Hurts. His inexperience is what has him lower on this list for me. Hurts has brought a fresh quarterback type to Philly considering he can run and pass the ball. This play style has not been seen in Philly since the days of Michael Vick.
Hurts has thrown for 4,063 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions as a starter. He also has 1,056 rushing yards in 19 games as a starter. Hurts has not been protected and sacks are an issue. If Hurts is given more time, he could be truly special for Philly. Hurts has time to rise on this list and I guarantee he will.
4.) Daniel Jones, New York Giants: 12-15 record as a starter
Daniel Jones is without a doubt the worst quarterback in this group. While he has plenty of talent, Jones has no help and has dealt with a shaky front office. While the Giants have revamped their entire coaching staff basically, Jones will still need time to adjust to this new coach. New head coach Brian Daboll turned Josh Allen into an MVP caliber quarterback in Buffalo and now he could do the same with Daniel Jones in New York.
In his 37 career starts, Jones has thrown for 8,381 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. Jones has been prone to turnovers and that is his downfall. He has no offensive help, no protection and this is all a recipe for disaster and failure. Funny enough, Jones’s best season as a pro came as a rookie in 2019 when he passed for 3,027-yards, 24 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. If Jones can get the help, he could be a solid franchise piece for the Giants but only time will tell at this point for Mr. Jones.
