The Top 5 NFL Throwback Uniforms Being Worn This Season

Now that the NFL has finally lifted its “one helmet” rule, allowing teams to use a second helmet, we’re now seeing how much they screwed up ever taking some of these jerseys from us. Many teams have unveiled an absolutely beautiful throwback or alternate jersey that they can wear up to three times a season.

5. Patriots Reds

The New England Patriots announced they will wear the red jersey and white helmet combo twice this season, bringing back the best jersey in their arsenal. The red jersey was the primary uniform in the team’s infancy from 1960 the whole way to 1993 when the navy and silver took over. This will be the seventh season it has made an alternate appearance. The last time they wore them was on October 21, 2012. An overtime win against the division-rival Jets. Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski pulled in two touchdowns.

4. Eagles Kelly Green

A jersey that the Philly faithful has been clamoring for since its extinction, the Philadelphia Eagles have tried it a couple of times in the past, but the jersey came out as more of a spearmint color than the Kelly green. The Eagles donned the Kelly green from 1935 the whole way to 1996 when they switched to the darker green that they rock today. Philadelphia captured three championships in the lighter jersey (1948, 1949, and 1960). The last time they tried it was in 2010. Kelly green is so much nicer on the eyes than the weird dark green/turquoise hybrid they wear these days.

3. Titans Oilers Throwback

Besides purple, baby blue is one of those colors that seems to never miss on jerseys. The Tennessee Titans are rolling out the light blue Houston Oilers jerseys this year and it’s going to be nice. The Houston Oilers relocated to Tennessee in 1997 and played two more seasons under the name Oilers before the switch to Titans was made. The jersey was donned from 1960-1996 and even made one short appearance in 2009 for the AFL 50th Anniversary. While it’s unsure how that division and the Titans season will shake out, at least they’ll look great in these a couple of times.

2. Buccaneers Creamsicle

Had to know this one would make the list, right? One of the prettiest jerseys in pro sports. So unique. There’s not another jersey in sports like it. While some people have been cracking jokes on Twitter, saying Mike Evans looks like WR1 for Popeyes Chicken, it’s a great jersey. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers originally wore them from 1976 to 1996. They brought them back once a year as an alternate from 2009-2012, until the NFL enforced the one-helmet rule, putting these beautiful jerseys and the “Bucco Bruce” helmets to rest. Now it’s finally back. The Bucs play the Titans this year, just saying. They have a chance to create one of the most aesthetically pleasing games for the eyes ever.

1. Seahawks Throwbacks

Could be the best jersey in pro sports at the moment in my opinion. The shiny silver helmet. The popping blue jerseys. The green accents. It’s all perfect. This should be the normal uniform in Seattle. Unfortunately, it means the death of the clean “wolf grey” uniform that was pretty awesome in its own right, it was well worth it. Seattle donned these beautiful uniforms from 1983 to 2001 when they switched to the navy and lime. The jersey well represents the seas and forests of the Emerald City and the Pacific Northwest.

Honorable Mentions

Throwback uniforms as a whole seldom miss. The designs of the 80s and 90s always hit compared to the minimalistic approach a lot of teams take today. Some of the other good throwbacks around the league include the Minnesota Vikings throwbacks that have the matte purple helmet, the New Orleans Saints jersey with the darker mustard hits, the Pittsburgh Steelers block number jersey that should be permanent, and the Miami Dolphins even don a nice throwback here and there. It’s even been leaked that the New York Jets are planning to roll out a throwback soon, what looks like a white jersey with green numbers and a green helmet with a white cage.

Keep ‘Em Coming, NFL!

Hopefully, this prompts a wave of throwback across the league everywhere. There are some good ones still out there to be remade. The Steelers bumblebee, the Bills red helmets, any old Jaguars jersey, the possibilities are endless.
