Ray Davis Has Fantasy Potential On A Great Offense
Ray Davis was drafted in the 4th round with the 128th pick by the Buffalo Bills after spending 5 seasons in college (3 full and 2 injured), where he was used at a high rate. Davis had 746 carries for 3626 yards (4.9 yards per attempt) and 29 touchdowns, and he added 94 receptions for 762 yards (8.1 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns.
Davis has a hefty build at 5'9, 215 pounds compared to James Cook at 5'11, 190 pounds; Davis could be the Bill's goalline and short yardage back they've been looking for (Latavius Murray, Damian Harris, Zach Moss), that is, of course, when they aren't using Josh Allen there. Cook finished as the RB12 overall, even with Joe Brady only calling plays from Week 11.
The Bills made a huge switch. They averaged 25 carries a game in the first 10 weeks, and then once Brady came in, they averaged 30.5 carries. In a full 17-game season, that would be 518 rushing plays in 2024, when they have averaged 450 over the last four seasons. With more carries to split between a more centralized share (Allen Cook Davis), Davis should be able to get around 100-130 touches.
Davis had 51 forced miss tackles (T42), 751 yards after contact (26th), and 16 carries of 15+ yards (T44), which shows that he can offer more than just a short-yardage back if given a chance. Davis is going at the 2/3 turn in rookie drafts. In redraft leagues, he could be a last-round option to handcuff with James Cook, but it's more likely people will scoop him up on the waivers. Watch out for his usage and see how it changes on a weekly basis.
Our consensus projections for Davis in the 2024 season are 97 carries for 408 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. As well as 11 receptions, 75 yards, and 1 touchdown.
