Royals Lock Up Their Brightest Star

On Monday afternoon, ESPN's Jeff Passan reported that the Kansas City Royals and star shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. have agreed on an 11-year contract extension worth $288.7 million.

Witt will also have opt-outs after the 7th, 8th,9th, and 10th years on his 11-year contract.

Witt has been on the Royals the past two seasons and turned himself into one of the best shortstops in the game last year. He led the league with 11 triples last season, batted .276, had 30 home runs, and drove in 96 runs in 158 games.

Witt will turn 24 years old in June so that the Royals will have Witt for a very long time, and he hasn't even entered his prime yet.

Locking up Witt right now is a massive move for the Royals; the franchise has been nearly dead for a decade, and they can't live on their 2015 World Series much longer.
