Saints Make Roster Cuts To Reach 80-Player Deadline
The New Orleans Saints have officially made enough cuts to meet the required 80-Man deadline set by the NFL. On Sunday, the team released QB KJ Costello, K John Parker Romo, and RB Devine Ozigbo. Per Nick Underhill of New Orleans Dot Football, the Saints have also released TE Chris Herndon and WR Kevin White was placed on IR. During the Saints injury prone tenure in 2021, White was a heavy target for former QB Trevor Siemian and QB Taysom Hill. White recorded just one catch for 38-yards and no touchdowns. The team also released WR Easop Winston Jr in a previous roster cut early last week. Winston Jr was picked up by the Cleveland Browns.
The release that surprised everyone the most was RB Devine Ozigbo. Ozigbo went undrafted after coming out of Nebraska in 2019, though he was among the team’s final cuts that season. Ozigbo then got picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars where he played the past three seasons. While playing for Jacksonville, Ozigbo recorded 72 rushing yards and caught 11 passes for 25 yards. The 25-year-old RB was picked up by the Denver Broncos on Monday afternoon.
The landing of White on IR makes 10 total players on the season-ending list. The list currently consists of T/G Sage Doxtater, OT Ethan Greenidge, C/G Forrest Lamp, DT Jaleel Johnson, LB Isaiah Pryor, S Smoke Monday, LB D’Marco Jackson, OT Jerald Hawkins, and CB Jordan Brown. Doxtater and Johnson were released with injury settlements.
New Orleans now has a window of seven days to get the roster down from 80 to its final 53-man form. The next deadline for roster cuts is August 30th at 4 p.m. EST. Each date from roster cuts has coincided with each of the three preseason games. Initial cuts started on August 16th and will have dwindled down from 90 to 53.
