Sam Howell Could Have Fantasy Relevance If He Pulls A Zappe
Through the first 13 weeks of the 2023 season, Howell had an impressive start fantasy-wise. He had 8 weeks where he finished as a top 10 QB and 3 other weeks as QB 11, 13, and 14. Howell didn’t always have the best performances, but due to his passing volume (612 Passing Attempts), he produced high enough passing numbers.
Howell isn’t an elite running quarterback, but he did add a solid number of rushing touchdowns (5). In weeks 15-18, Howell struggled massively, averaging 5.02 fantasy points per game during that stretch. He was even supposed to be benched, but fellow QB Jacoby Brissett suffered an injury after getting a chance to start.
In these 4 weeks, Howell failed to finish higher than QB 25. As he didn’t produce well from an NFL standpoint most of the season, the Commanders decided to move on and traded him to the Seahawks. Geno Smith is the Seahawks' starter, but he struggled at many points during the 2023 season. If Smith struggles or suffers an injury, it would likely be that Howell will get the chance to start.
The Seahawks may just have one of the best WR rooms in the leagues, including DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba, which would offer solid support for Howell. Based on his work at Washington, Ryan Grubbs figures to be a strong coordinator, but translating from college to pro is difficult.
He should be avoided in 1 QB redraft leagues unless he is given a starting chance. In 2 QB dynasty leagues, he is an interesting hold as he could get the chance to lead Seattle in the future.
Our consensus projections for Howell in the 2024 season would be: 80 completions, 861 yards, 4 touchdowns, 2 interceptions through the air, and 10 carries for 53 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.
