San Francisco 49ers Acquire This Offensive Playmaker

The San Francisco 49ers have had a busy off-season. After losing in Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs, the team is under a lot of pressure to make it back with a team this talented. The team has held put despite rumors of trading disgruntled star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, especially after drafting Florida wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.

Looking past that situation, the team bolstered its defense by signing Packers star linebacker De'Vondre Campbell, and former Bills and Bears linebacker Leonard Floyd. After releasing star defensive lineman Arik Armstead earlier in the off-season, the team added two defensive tackles.

But the 49ers are not done adding yet. The team announced this week that they have signed tight end Logan Thomas, formerly of the Washington Commanders. This will be the 32-year-old's seventh team since being drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 2014. While the team already has one of the best tight ends in the league, George Kittle and Thomas will give San Francisco an experienced backup.

49ers Add Experience By Bringing In Commanders Tight End Logan Thomas

While Logan Thomas was drafted in 2014, he would not find his footing in the NFL until 2020, when he signed with the then-Washington Football Team. In a breakout season that helped Washington claim its first division title in five years, Thomas started 15 games and hauled in 72 catches for 670 yards and six touchdowns. His 72 catches were twice as many as he racked up in his first four seasons.

Injuries plagued his 2021 season, as Thomas only played four games. But his last two seasons saw him put up a respectable 300+ yards in each season, including 496 last year. Now, he joins San Francisco, hoping to find a role in the offense and maybe bring home a Super Bowl ring as well. The contract was signed for one year, with the cash value not announced yet.

Logan Thomas: The Next Great 49ers QB?

Did you know Logan Thomas has quarterback experience? The 32-year-old started his career in the NFL as a backup quarterback until he switched to tight end with Detroit in 2016. This is important because the 49ers often use their receivers in trick plays, some of which include throwing the ball. Wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw a touchdown pass in Super Bowl LVIII, and it would not be surprising if Thomas gets his shot to throw his first touchdown pass since 2014.
