Seahawks Crushed By 49ers 27-7: Quick Reaction, Seahawks Offense Lacks Any Excitement
The Seahawks took a loss in Santa Clara on Sunday afternoon, and while there were signs of good play at times, the team took a step back from the fire it brought to its Week One matchup.
12s everywhere were forced to watch an ugly showing from the Seahawks against the 49ers on the road Sunday afternoon. The team, coming off an incredible upset over the Broncos, failed to bring the energy they would have needed to Santa Clara and lost definitively to move to 0-1.
Seahawks Takeaways From Week Two Loss
Linebackers picked apart, position shows lack of depth
The Seahawks linebacking corps, while remaining fairly good against the run, showed today that they have no business playing in coverage. Seattle will need to address this in the coming draft by going after a pure coverage linebacker that can effectively cover middle-of-field zones and go man-to-man with tight ends. I don’t see Cody Barton at making a push for a long-term starting job on this roster.
Rookie corners tested again, have room for improvement
Through two games, I have seen some really good moments from Tariq Woolen. He made a big play with a blocked field goal that was returned for a touchdown. However, he and Coby Bryant are being picked on by opposing offenses, and rightfully so. Woolen has struggled at times to break down on comeback routes, and Coby Bryant was called for a costly penalty today. Both of these players have a bright future with the Seahawks, but they will need more game experience to look like they can compete with star receivers.

Tyler Lockett stays effective, does he have a chemistry with Geno?
Lockett had nine grabs for 107 yards on 11 targets in this game. Most of Lockett’s contributions came on short out-routes, and these plays were where the offense was the most effective in the game. He also had a nice 27-yard grab where he looked like his same self, finding the gap on an extended play and connecting with Geno. Coming from someone who thought Lockett may become ineffective because he was so connected to Russell Wilson, it was great to see that he played well with a relatively new quarterback.
Darrell Taylor looks rattled, will he fall flat this season?
Coming into his second year of play, I was a big believer that Darrell Taylor had the potential to be the driving force behind the Seahawks defense this season. I thought he had an upside of 15 sacks. He has yet to get to the quarterback, and that’s not what’s truly concerning. Both the Broncos and 49ers have schemed their running game up to run the ball right to Darrell Taylor’s side of the field, and he has missed several tackles. Throughout the rest of this season, Taylor has to get better at setting the edge and not letting runners out of his grasp if he wants to find a way to a long-term contract with the Seahawks.
Extra Note: Trey Lance will miss his sophomore season
Trey Lance went down in the first quarter this afternoon with a serious ankle injury that will require season-ending surgery. Hopefully he’s able to make a swift recovery. This will be an interesting storyline to watch in an ever-changing NFC West landscape. The 49ers will rely on Jimmy Garoppolo to be their signal-caller for the remainder of the season.
