South Carolina Win Streak Reaches 42 Games
The South Carolina Gamecocks sports the best women's basketball team in the land. They are currently the number one team in the polls, and rightfully so. They just stomped East Carolina 95-44, and while that makes them 4-0 to start the season, a bigger achievement, is that the win makes 42 straight.
The team's last loss was March 31, 2023, in the final four against Iowa. Prior to that, they lost 64-62 to Kentucky in the 2022 SEC tournament. The last time they lost a regular season game, was December 30, 2021, against Missouri. That's a regular season win streak of 87 games. They have won two NCAA Championships over that time.
The 2024-25 squad is averaging 81.5 points per game and allowing just 55.8. It is made up of experience, as the squad sports just three freshmen. Only one of them, Joyce Edwards, is playing over 20 minutes per game. Junior Chloe Kitts leads the team in points per game (17.3) and rebounds per game (10.3).
Sophomore guard MiLaysia Fulwiley is second in scoring (14.3 points per game), and senior guard Te-Hina Paopao is third (13.5), but leads the team in assists per game (4.0).
South Carolina seems to get better every game, winning their season opener against Michigan by six points, then beating NC State by 14, followed by a 32-point win against Coppin State, and then a 51-point win last night against East Carolina.
The Gamecocks visit Clemson on Wednesday, followed by an away game against number five-ranked UCLA on November 24. It will be interesting to see how they match up against the size and speed of the Bruins.
They will also play Texas twice this season, and UConn towards the end of the year. They have yet to show any sort of weakness this season, and maybe that will be revealed against some of their top-ranked opponents, but for now, the defending champs look unbeatable.
