Takeaways From Auburn's Spring Game
With Auburn's Spring game finished and some of the questions we've had for this version of Auburn's football team getting answers, we have a much better understanding of what this team could look like. Let's get into the takeaways I had from Auburn's Spring game.
The Frontrunner At Quarterback Is Clear
Everything I had heard from practice reports is that it's Payton Thorne's job to lose, and after seeing the quarterbacks rotate in the offense, I understood why. He looked more comfortable in the new offense, with Hugh Freeze more involved as the primary play-caller. Thorne did have some inaccurate passes that could be something to monitor as the practice continues.
The Defensive Back Room May Be The Best Unit On The Roster
Even with losing players like DJ James, Jaylin Simpson, and Nehemiah Pritchett to the NFL Draft, the defensive back unit looked like the best group at A-Day. While the group is young, the talent is undeniable. Watch out for guys like Sylvester Smith and Kayin Lee to make some noise this Fall.
Cam Coleman Is Good As Advertised
Cam Coleman is a talent that Auburn hasn't seen in many years. As a freshman, he already looks the part of a high-level SEC wide receiver. His mix of body control with ball skills is rare for such a young player. As a younger player, he needs work on hand fighting in press coverage and continued development as a route runner, learning to separate from corners.
Towns McGough Is Elite
The Hometown kid Towns McGough had himself a day at Auburn's Spring Game. McGough went 7/7 on field goals, one of them being a 58-yard field goal on the last play of the game, giving the Auburn offense the win.
