Takeaways From Controversial Boston Celtics NBA Media Day
The first NBA Media Day is done! This is an exciting time for NBA fans, as it means the preseason is just around the corner. Every NBA fan has been waiting patiently for the upcoming season to begin, filled with mystery and potential. Whether it’s signings, trades, or new rookies they want to see on the hardwood, almost every team has something exciting and new to look forward to.
The defending champion Boston Celtics are first up for Media Day. There were a whole lot of interesting quotes, in particular from the star wings.
Jayson Tatum
Jayson Tatum is fresh off a summer where he won an NBA Championship and Olympic Gold Medal. This man should be over the moon! However, Tatum talked instead about his lack of court time in the Olympics. He didn’t directly throw shots at anyone in particular, but it was clear that he was perplexed about the coaching staff’s decision to keep him benched for multiple games.
It wasn't all negative for Tatum, though, as he kept it light-hearted. He dubbed Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla his biggest hater, saying, "Joe was the happiest person in the world that I didn't win Finals MVP and didn't play in two games in the Olympics."
Tatum also mentioned that he didn't need motivation for the upcoming seasons, but the summer events will certainly give the 26-year-old an extra boost.
Jaylen Brown
The Finals MVP came to the day with a freshly shaven face. NBA fans criticized Brown for his new look on social media, as they had become so accustomed to the beard he's had since his rookie season.
Brown was very lighthearted at the press conference, laughing about his 'snub' from the U.S. Olympic team. He also introduced his new brand, 741, after recently becoming a sneaker-free agent. His signature model, 'Rover,' was premiered and received a mixed review from fans and the media.
Best Of The Rest
Coach Joe Mazzulla had some absolute gems, as Celtics fans have grown accustomed to. He spoke about how he didn't like the off-season but enjoyed the parade as it was 'intense.' When asked if this season feels different after a championship year, Mazzulla said, "...zero difference... when it does feel different, that's when I'd rather not do it anymore".
Derrick White made it clear his teeth were on the mend after having a tooth chipped in Game 5 of the Finals. He also addressed the viral clip of him seemingly getting hit in the middle of an altercation at a Colorado football game a week ago. He said that he only got his hat knocked off his head and wasn't hit in the face at all.
The 2023 Champion Denver Nuggets have their Media Day on Thursday, bringing some hilarious content from the reigning MVP.
