The Chargers Bring In A Veteran Defender

Tony Jefferson, the 32-year-old safety, is officially back in the NFL. The Los Angeles Chargers announced that they’ve signed him after he tried out for a roster spot during their minicamp. The specific financial terms of Jefferson’s deal were not immediately disclosed.

Jefferson brings a wealth of experience to the Chargers. Throughout his career, he has started 67 out of 113 regular-season contests with the Arizona Cardinals, Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Giants. His impressive stats include 448 tackles (331 solo), 9.5 sacks, 34 tackles for loss, four interceptions, 24 passes defensed, and eight forced fumbles.

Jefferson is a native of Chula Vista, California. He played three seasons at the University of Oklahoma. Bursting onto the scene in 2010, he was named a Sporting News Freshman All-American. He recorded 181 tackles and eight picks for the Sooners in three seasons of play. Despite a strong college career, Jefferson ultimately went undrafted. His pro debut came with the Cardinals in 2013.

Jefferson looks to compete for a roster spot in 2024, but has not played a regular season snap since 2021. He spent last season with Baltimore on the scouting department.
