The Cleveland Cavaliers Lock Up Their Biggest Star In A Shocking Contract Extension
It might only be July 2nd, but for all Cavaliers fans, Christmas came early on Tuesday morning when star guard Donovan Mitchell agreed to a three-year, 105.3 million dollar contract extension with a player option in 2027-2028.
After Mitchell was traded to the Cavs from the Utah Jazz in the fall of 2022, many people thought he would be out the door and leave Cleveland after two seasons.
The worst kept secret in the NBA was that Mitchell wanted to return to the New York area where he is from and play for the New York Knicks. and they even tried to trade for him in 2022. Still, the trade fell through, and that's how he ended up in Cleveland. However, the Knicks went in a different direction with Jalen Brunson, and now New York is one of the best teams in the NBA.
Cleveland has never been known for being able to keep star players around, and even Lebron James, who grew up in Northeast Ohio, left the city twice. Still, Mitchell, who isn't even from the area, wanted to stay in Cleveland, which was a significant win for the town.
Mitchell is quickly becoming one of the city's favorite players to play for one of the Cleveland teams. Now that the Mitchell drama is over, it's time to focus on improving the team and gearing up for postseason runs for the next few years.
