The Philadelphia Eagles Final Roster Is Missing Two Key Positions

This week, the Philadelphia Eagles finalized their 53-man roster. The team had to go from 90 players at the beginning of training camp to just 53. While most of the spots were already assumed, there were still some position battles that took place. It was an exciting summer as the Eagles had to prepare for the 2023 season; one where they hope to avenge their Super Bowl loss from last season.

Over the course of the summer, some players impressed, while others not so much. The team was hoping that a couple of key special teams players that were starters last year were going to take the next step. Unfortunately, that was not the case with punt returner Britain Covey and punter Arryn Siposs not even making the final roster. They were ultimately brought back to the practice squad, but why did the team do this?

The Eagles Do Not Have A Punter Or Punt Returner On The 53-Man Roster

Both return specialist Britain Covey and punter Arryn Siposs made the team a year ago, but they are now only on the practice squad. In 2022, Covey averaged 9.3 yards per punt return, good for 17th in the league for players with at least 10 attempts. He averaged just 20.6 yards per kick return.

As for punter Arryn Siposs, the Australian has not found consistent success in the NFL. He averaged 45.6 yards per punt last year, which was 26th in the league. Siposs did improve upon his 2021 numbers but was still near the bottom of the league. Kansas State alum Ty Zentner was brought in as competition this summer but was also cut. With limited options available, Siposs still has a home for now.

They Could Call Them Up On Game Day

Despite both Covey and Siposs being on the practice squad, the NFL now allows up to two practice squad players to suit up for game day. This could be an option for the team without having them take up a valuable spot on the 53-man roster. However, the same player can only be called up three times. This means after Week Three, the Eagles would have to clear up a spot for either Covey or Siposs.

If there are injuries or another player under performs, this might not be too big of a deal. Otherwise, Covey or Siposs would need to impress in the actual games. Philadelphia is also reportedly working out punters, so it will be interesting to see how they handle the situation.
