The Ring General Reigns On WWE Monday Night Raw.
This past Saturday on the WWE Premium Live Event SummerSlam The Ring General Gunther, won his first world championship in WWE. An assist from a supposed close friend of Priest's, Finn Balor Gunther was able to overcome the former champion.
This match signaled the last pillar of Judgement Day as we know it to fall. Priest seemed to have the match won, after hitting both the Razor's Edge, and the South of Heaven Chokeslam the champion attempted to cover Gunther. The referee slid into the perfect position to see Gunther's shoulders on the mat. Unfortunately for Priest, the referee could not see Finn Balor pull Gunther's leg onto the bottom rope forcing the official to stop the count.
Not even Priest realized how Gunther got his leg on the rope until after the match when he saw it on the video board. An irate Priest left in the ring, as a smug snarling Balor walked back to the locker room. Almost exactly a year after Damien Priest cost Finn Balor his chance at the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins, Balor got his revenge on his former friend sending the Judgement Day into a complete tailspin.
Gunther went on to celebrate his new championship on Monday Night Raw. He delivered an excellent promo that put the entire locker room on notice. Gunther has been red-hot ever since joining the main roster. From his 666-day Intercontinental Championship reign to his first reign ever as a World Champion for WWE. With countless phenomenal matches against legends, and newcomers alike. Gunther has taken them all down, and done it impressively.
Shake's Take:
Ever since I started watching Gunther I have been impressed by his work. He is an old-school guy. He isn't afraid to work during a match. The way he controls the pace of a match is unbelievable. In a sport where most people are focused on the highlight reel, and hitting crazy spots he is not afraid to slow things down and work over an opponent. From his chest-caving chops to one of the more brutal clotheslines I have seen in a long time Gunther has a throwback style that both old and new wrestling fans can enjoy.
I have been saying that Gunther will be the next great world champion in the WWE, for over a year now. It is yet to be seen if his reign will reach the lengths of Roman's record-setting 1,316-day reign, but Gunther will not drop this belt anytime soon. He is poised for the longest run in the championship's short history, it will be interesting to see if they can consistently get Gunther competition worthy of a championship match.
