The Steelers Have Made A Controversial Signing

It wasn’t a secret that the Steelers cornerback room needed some help. Besides Joey Porter Jr and Donte Jackson, there are many question marks.

On Wednesday morning, the Steelers brought an old friend home as reinforcements for Porter Jr. and Jackson when they signed Cam Sutton to a one-year minimum contract. At this time, it isn't clear whether or not the NFL will dish out a suspension to Sutton.

Sutton left the Steelers last offseason to sign with the budding Detroit Lions, but that didn’t last long. Sutton was released after domestic violence charges that put him on the run from the police before turning himself in.

While it’s not to condone that type of behavior as there is no place for that in our society, it seemed out of character for Sutton. Everyone who was around him in Pittsburgh and worked with him regularly was shocked by the news.

Although he may have lost himself in Detroit, there's no better place for a second chance than home, with Mike Tomlin, who met with Sutton extensively before the signing. It feels like Coach Tomlin took this one personally and wants to keep a close eye on Sutton, one can hope at least.

Heart Of A Lion

Last season was a shaky one for Sutton in Detroit. They had him playing outside a lot of the year which he’s alright at, but this year the Steelers putting him in the slot will be where he thrives. No expectations to be the CB1, just time to play football.

In his one season with the Lions, Sutton started in all 17 games and had one interception on six passes defended, one forced fumble, and 65 total tackles with 50 being solo and four tackles for loss. He even appeared in 99% of defensive snaps for Dan Campbell and the Lions. It wasn’t an awful season for Sutton, but his counterpart and former college teammate Emmanuel Moseley spent most of the season battling injuries.

Although the team sustained success into the playoffs, they fell short and everything fell apart for Sutton, who now gets a chance to land on his feet in Pittsburgh with Coach Tomlin and the Steelers.

Once A Steeler, Always A Steeler

Sutton spent six seasons with the Steelers before leaving to go to Detroit, and in those six years, Steelers fans watched him blossom into a player that they all loved. Hopefully, he can get back to that one day.

With the Steelers, Sutton appeared in 84 games and started 39 of them. In those games, he posted eight interceptions, 38 passes defended, five forced fumbles, one fumble recovery, two sacks, 168 total tackles, 143 solo tackles, and 12 tackles for loss.

In 2022, he appeared in 94% of defensive snaps, down from his 99% in 2021 with Pittsburgh. Also in 2022, Sutton ranked sixth in the NFL in passes defended with 15. The Steelers used the 94th pick in the third round on him in the 2017 NFL Draft, and here he is, back again. Sutton just turned 29 years old and will look to turn things around in a place he’s comfortable in.
