The Three Most Puzzling 2024 All-Star Selections

The 2024 All-Star Game Selections have been released to the public with names like Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Bryce Harper, and Shohei Ohtani headlining the star-loaded roster. The group of players looks good at first glance but upon further inspection, some selections are quite bad. Three of them stand out from everyone else as particularly egregious and need even further scrutiny from fans.

#1: Marcus Semien - 2B - AL

Marcus Semien

Marcus Semien's selection to this year's All-Star team is the worst by far. Among 2B with at least 100 at-bats in the AL this season, Semien ranks 9th with an OPS of .686. That mark is worse than both Jorge Mateo and Isiah Kiner-Falefa, two guys who are also not good enough to make the team. Jordan Westburg or Willi Castro would have both been much better picks even though they've both now made the as injured replacements.

#2: Clay Holmes - RP - AL

Clay Holmes

If the All-Star team was decided in mid-May, Clay Holmes would be an excellent pick. Unfortunately for Holmes, the team is decided in early July. Holmes has an ERA of 5.54 since the beginning of July which has inflated his ERA to 2.89. This wouldn't be that bad of an overall selection if there weren't two better closers in his division. Kenley Jansen and Craig Kimbrel have both been more consistently great for their teams so far this year but Holmes likely got in because of the logo on his jersey.

#3: Luis Arraez - 2B - NL

Luis Arraez

Arraez has a very particular set of skills that allow him to appear better than he is. His batting average and K% rate are great but they don't make for his large number of weaknesses. He's a contact-only bat which has led him to lack any true power skills or ability to draw walks. Additionally, he is one of the worst defenders in the entire league. Him being an All-Star backup wouldn't be that bad if the MLB hadn't left out Francisco Lindor for no reason despite his bat being better than Arraez and being among the best defensive shortstops in the MLB.
