The Time Is Now For The Eagles To Get Right

The Philadelphia Eagles are 2-2 to start the 2024 season. The team, fans, and league had high expectations for the Eagles after making big offseason moves. The Eagles brought in Saquon Barkley from their division rivals, New York Giants, as well as C.J. Gardner-Johnson from Detroit, and Bryce Huff from the New York Jets and the organization used its top two picks in the draft on high-profile defensive backs to help shore up the secondary.

General manager Howie Roseman put together one of the most talented rosters, on paper, after a catastrophic end to the 2023 season which resulted in a Wild Card blowout loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the playoffs. The Eagles got off to a hot 10-1 start a season ago before losing six of their last seven games, including the playoff loss. Philadelphia owns a 3-8 record in its last 11 games, and the pressure is mounting.

Franchise quarterback Jalen Hurts has received a lot of criticism dating back to last season. He hasn’t been the same type of player he was two years ago who led the Eagles to a Super Bowl appearance against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Head coach Nick Sirianni has also begun to lose the trust and patience of the fanbase after his team’s collapse last season and start this season. The defensive coordinator hire of long-time coach Vic Fangio during the offseason looked great at the time, but the defense’s poor performance across the first four games has been the talk of the town in Philadelphia.

The Eagles had a much-needed bye week in Week 5. The team wasn’t living up to expectations and, they were dealing with key injuries to their star players. Wide receiver A.J. Brown missed three straight games with a hamstring injury, fellow wideout DeVonta Smith missed the Week 4 matchup against the Buccaneers with a concussion as did All-Pro right tackle Lane Johnson. The bye week gave the Eagles a chance to regroup, adjust and get healthy.

The next four weeks will determine the rest of the Eagles’ season. They take on the 1-4 Cleveland Browns on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. They’ll then head to MetLife Stadium to take on the 2-3 division rival Giants before heading to Cincinnati to face off with the 1-4 Bengals.

The Eagles will head back home for a Sunday Night Football showdown with the 1-4 Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 9. This is a stretch of games that Philadelphia should come away with four wins. Anything less than three wins in this four-game stretch would be a disappointment for a team that had Super Bowl aspirations coming into the season.

Philadelphia is a tough city to play in. The fans are as passionate as they come and they aren’t afraid to let their teams know when they aren’t living up to their standards. If the Eagles want to turn their season around, they need to start with a statement win against the Browns in front of their home crowd coming out of the bye week.

The fanbase and media will go into a frenzy for all the wrong reasons if the team loses in Week 6 and the weeks ensuing. It’s now or never for the Eagles to get back on track.
