The Top 10 Least Passionate Fan Bases In College Football Ranked By An Expert
It is a downtime for college football, and the season doesn't start for about another two months, so a bunch of different lists and rankings are coming out, and one big one came out on Wednesday that upset many fans.
Tom Fornelli from CBS Sports and Cover 3 Podcast put out his Top Ten Least Passionate Fan Bases In College Football, and here is the list.
10. LSU
LSU has a very passionate fan base, so them being on the list is a little nuts. Death Valley is one of the loudest and best stadiums in college football, and when Garth Brooks's song Callin' Baton Rouge comes on, the stadium goes wild. The fans always support their Tigers, so there is no reason they should be on the list.
9. Alabama
Alabama fans get a bad rap because they leave games early in September when they play Middle Tennessee, but the fan base is still tremendous, and Bryant–Denny Stadium is always rocking out. The Crimson Tide fans are used to winning games, and many contests they play aren't competitive, so they aren't as passionate about those games. However, they have one of the best fan bases in the SEC and are just as good as LSU.
8. Florida
Florida was last relevant in football in the mid-2000s with Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. People must realize how great the fans are when the team is excellent. Since we last saw it a while ago, the fanbase has taken a hit, and that's probably how they ended up on this list.
7. Penn State
Take Penn State off this list. Have you ever seen Happy Valley during a whiteout at night? It's one of the best scenes in college football. The Nittany Lions have a Top Five fanbase in the sport, and there's no reason to have them on here.
6. Texas
Texas is the first team I agree with being on the list. Their fans are good when the team is excellent, but they don't have much passion about them when things aren't going well. The University of Texas is in Austin, one of America's loveliest and most incredible cities. There is much to do there, and it has taken over the football scene. The city has become way more significant than football there, and the fanbase has taken a hit through the years.
5. Notre Dame
Notre Dame fans are very passionate, but it's just about them explaining how great their team was 40 years ago. Although Notre Dame hasn't done much in college football for a while now, it's still a party every weekend in South Bend, and it shouldn't be on this list.
4. Tennessee
Tennessee has one of the loudest and craziest fan bases, and it just doesn't stop at college football. Their team just won the College World Series in baseball, and it was a fantastic party for every fan. In recent memory, Tennessee has had some down years in football, but the team is coming back, and they could even make the new 12-team College Football Playoff this season. Tennessee fans stick by their team when they are good and bad, and they show passion every single weekend.
3. Texas A&M
Texas A&M should be far from this list. They are so passionate that they don't realize how bad of a football team they have and talk them up like they're going to beat Georgia by 70. These people defended Jimbo Fisher up until the end. Aggie fans are also very good at showing love and support to all their teams.
2. Florida State
Florida State fans went wild last year when their team was left out of the playoff after going undefeated in the regular season. They are a very passionate group of fans, and ask ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit how passionate they are. Florida State fans are excellent and always showing out every Saturday.
Ohio State comes in at number one here, and there is a discussion to be had about them. They aren't exactly the most passionate for most of their games, and the stadium is quiet becuase they expect to win every week. When Rutgers comes to town, people aren't thrilled about it, but they do have an excellent environment for tough games, like when Michigan comes in, and that's about it. The fanbase travels well when the team is in the playoffs, but the fans are usually coming home sad because they can't win a big game.
