Theo Johnson Has Tempting Fantasy Value In Rookie Year
Theo Johnson (6'6 250) was drafted with the 107th overall pick in the 4th round by the New York Giants after he spent four seasons at Penn State. He compiled 77 receptions on 100 targets (77% catch rate) for 938 yards (12.2 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns. This is on a run-heavy Penn State offense, which can explain the lack of production.
Johnson brings an interesting size and speed profile to the Giants, who have struggled to get production from the Tight End for years. Johnson is a very capable vertical route runner, which should help the Giants create explosive passing plays even from their heavier 12-person sets.
The depth chart ahead of him (Daniel Bellinger) makes it not difficult for him to rise up and be a contributor in year one. The Giants have one reliable target on the offense, and he's a rookie: Malik Nabers. WanDale Robinson and Jalin Hyatt are nice pieces, but neither has proven they can stay healthy or command targets.
Theo could quickly become a focal point in this offense, but how good can the offense be this year? Johnson has been going in the late second round or early third in rookie drafts, which is a reasonable price for someone with his path to playing time. As the 198th player on the board in startups, he is a pretty solid value. He should be a waiver wire add Redraft if he breaks out this year.
