This Legendary NFL Star Just Retired

There have been so many legends to play for the National Football League. When someone asks who is an NFL legend, most would say John Elway, Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Barry Sanders, Calvin Johnson, and Jim Brown. In an off-season where we have seen future Hall-Of-Fame specialist Matthew Slater retired, coach Bill Belichick leaving the Patriots, and center Jason Kelce potentially retiring, we have another star to add to the list. This time, it is an NFL star who wasn't on the field, but on the sideline.

Legendary Reporter Peter King Has Announced His Retirement From Covering NFL

Legendary NFL reporter Peter King has announced his retirement from covering the National Football League after over 40 years in the business. The 66-year-old wrote for Sports Illustrated from 1989 to 2018 and has since been on NBC Sports' show Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio and Chris Simms. The three-time National Sportswriter of the Year is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Board of Selectors and appears on Sunday Night In America before Sunday Night Football kicks off on NBC.

Peter King announced this week in his column that he was stepping away from the game he loved to write for. In his article, King stated that the reason he was retiring was because of multiple reasons, which included wanting to watch football on TV and not the sideline, and also because he wanted to spend more time with his family.

King went on to thank some of his close friends and reporters including Mike Florio and also hopes that there will continue to be more storytellers on the sideline but he is optimistic about the future.

King says referring to the many reporters still left in sports, "I hope the pipeline doesn’t dry up. One fear I have is that enough strong young writers and imaginative media people won’t have the entrée into this business that I had. The business that was once majority reporter has now shifted to majority analyst/opinioninst. We need more storytellers to emerge. There are so, so many stories to tell in a league with 1,700 active players and 650 or so coaches."

Best of luck to Peter King on his retirement and whatever he decides to do next I hope he is very successful! If you want to read the rest of Peter's column, you can do so here.
