Here are three big takeaways from the Patriots vs Ravens game
The Patriots had a tough game against the Ravens, and ultimately they came up a little short, losing 37-26. New England has shown improvement from week one, but they still have another level they need to hit. Here are the big takeaways from the game.
3. Devante Parker’s Breakout Game
Up until week three, Devante Parker only had one catch for nine yards. Against the Ravens today, he finally showed his true potential. Parker five receptions for 156 yards. New England clearly needed a true number one receiver, which is the main reason they got Parker in the first place. With Jakobi Meyers being out, Parker had a perfect opportunity to showcase his talent, and he certainly did. Devante Parker was able to make contested catches, and he was just able to be the big X receiver the Patriots need.
If Devante Parker is able to perform around this level, New England has a receiving core they can be very confident in. With Devante Parker as the number one receiver, Meyers as the second, Bourne as the third, and Agholor as the fourth, New England has a receiving core with lots of depth, and they have an unpredictable one. Any of the receivers mentioned before can have very productive games, which would be very hard to scheme for.
2. Sloppy Turnovers
New England doesn’t have much star talent, which makes it even more important that they limit careless turnovers. Mac Jones had three interceptions against the Ravens. Two of them came in times where New England had an opportunity to win the game. On top of careless interceptions, Nelson Agholor had a really bad fumble. New England was only down one possession then, and if there wasn’t a fumble, it would have been a huge gain. Mac’s chase for aggression this season will ultimately yield positive results, but currently, it is compromising his decision making.
The Patriots generally are very sharp, and they don’t have bad turnovers. How they have played to start the year has been uncharacteristic of them. Bill Belichick will need to do his best to make sure New England doesn’t beat themselves. The room for error New England has is very short, and they need to be more sharp against the Packers next week.
1. Progression
Obviously the outcome was not good, but the game was a lot closer than the score. Mac Jones had 323 yards of passing, which is his high for this season. Devante Parker also had his best game with the Patriots. New England’s offense has started getting better each and every week. With a completely new offensive coordinator, and new offensive pieces, the offense is showing good progression.
Mac for the most part was very decisive, and his arm strength looks much improved from last season. Something that can easily be forgotten is that Kyle Dugger didn’t play. Devin McCourty was getting torched by Lamar, and a younger more athletic Kyle Dugger was needed this game.
This was New England’s best offensive showing so far into the 2022 season. All you can ask for at this point is development. New England has a young roster, and their young talent flashes their potential. Rhamondre Stevenson had a terrific game with twelve carries for seventy three yards, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Overall, New England is progressing, which is a great thing to see, but that progression needs to start translating to wins in such a stacked conference.
