Three Players The Front Office Should Trade For

The trade deadline is on November 1st, shortly after the conclusion of Week Eight. To be true super bowl contenders, the 49ers may need to trade to improve certain positions.

Seattle Cornerback, Sidney Jones

The cornerback position has now become a position of need for the 49ers’ defense after Emmanuel Moseley’s season-ending injury. The veteran Sidney Jones has been a healthy scratch multiple times this season and the Seahawks have made it known he is available for trade.

Jones has a career stat of allowing 57.9% of passes thrown his way become completions. With the Niners being so depleted at his position, that kind of production would boost the threat of their secondary.

Right now the 49ers’ top two corners are Chavarius Ward and Jason Verrett, who hopes to make his season debut in Week Seven. Jones would likely earn the spot of being third on the depth chart. Not only would this improve the defense on three corner sets, but would also add depth at the position barring any more injuries.

The problem with acquiring Jones would be that inter-divisional trades, especially during a competitive season, tend to be avoided. Seattle may be willing to trade him to the 49ers, but his price would probably be higher to send him to a division rival.

Washington Defensive Tackle, Daron Payne

The Niners’ defensive line has been plagued with injuries already in the 2022 season. Both the tackle and edge positions have not been fully healthy all season long.

The Washington Commanders have struggled so far this season and are sitting at a 2-4 record. Their front office may decide to move some of their bigger names and go into a rebuild mode.

Payne has had a productive season so far, tallying up 3.5 sacks. This has been the best start to a season in his career and he looks like he may be in his prime. Adding another pass rusher alongside Nick Bosa would make it difficult for opposing teams to protect their quarterback.

However, the asking price for Payne could be a pretty pricey one. He is in the last year of his contract and could essentially turn into a one-year rental with a high trade price. Although sometimes making a big move like that is needed to be true contenders.

Broncos Running Back, Melvin Gordon

The Denver Broncos have had a disappointing start to a season that started hopeful. The teams’ frustrations have already been showing, especially Gordon’s. After being benched in Week Six, Gordon liked a tweet suggesting that he be traded.

49ers running back Elijah Mitchell got injured in Week One and is not expected to return until Week Ten. Gordon would be a nice compliment in the backfield to Mitchell when he returns, giving more play options for Kyle Shanahan to use. In an offense that is typically built around the run game, adding another weapon to the backfield is never a bad option.

The price for acquiring Gordon seems like it may not be too hefty of one either. The coaching staff seems like they are ready to move on from him so they may not ask for much in return. Adding a veteran running back for a low price can turn into a massive win for the 49ers’ offense.

Honorable Mentions

Christian McCaffrey: With the Panthers seeming like they are going to commit to a full rebuild, the running back has been in a lot of trade rumors. It seems as if the favorites to acquire him are the 49ers, Rams, Bills, and Broncos. His injury history however seems unappealing as the Niners have already experienced too many injuries. The Panthers have also made it known that they would need a high-value exchange for McCaffery.

Kamu Grugier-Hill: The Texans linebacker has had a good season so far. The team is in full rebuild mode and is more than likely willing to trade players for youth. The Niners have suffered injuries from their linebackers Azeez Al-Shaair and Demetrius Flannigan-Folwes. They need an outside linebacker and Grugier-Hill may have a lower trade price to acquire.
