Top 5 Available NFL Defensive Free Agents

The NFL season is approaching. The draft is over and teams are currently in the middle of OTAs. Teams will start to notice the holes in their defense. Here are some players to watch for as potential veteran additions to championship-contending teams.

5. Darius Leonard

Shaquille Leonard Former Defensive Rookie of the Year

The Colts released Shaquille Leonard this past season due to his performance and comments about his playing time. However, he was a valuable addition for the Eagles late in the season after accepting a smaller role with the team. Leonard was once the Rookie of the Year; however, his back injury has kept him off the field, which seems to be why teams are hesitant to sign him.

4. Yannick Ngakoue

Yannick Ngakoue

Yannick Ngakoue was once a sack machine. His numbers took a dip last year. With that being said Yannick is great in past coverage and seems to show up at the right time a lot, but he's the best run stopper and that to me is what's stopping him from signing his next contract.

3. Stephon Gilmore

2019 Defensive Player of the Year, Stephon Gilmore

Stephon Gilmore's performance dipped a bit last season with the Cowboys, but he remains the best available cornerback in free agency. Gilmore would be a valuable addition to any team's cornerback group. He was previously named Defensive Player of the Year and is still a strong tackler. I believe it's about finding the right team for Gilmore to pursue a championship at this stage of his career.

2. Emmanuel Ogbah

Super Bowl Champion Emmanuel Ogbah

The Dolphins released Emmanuel Ogbah to free up $13.7 million in cap space. However, if a team is looking for a veteran edge rusher to add depth and competition to the edge position, Ogbah is the perfect candidate to do so.

1. Justin Simmons

All-Pro Justin Simmons

Justin Simmons is currently the best available safety, but he hasn't signed because he is asking for too much money. At one time, Simmons was the highest-paid safety in the NFL. It's been reported that he's currently looking for 10-15 million dollars per year.
