Top Astros Prospect Makes Highly Anticipated Debut Against Cleveland
Right now, the Astros need something to jolt this season in the right direction and they could be taking that step tonight by promoting minor leaguer Joey Loperfido. Loperfido has been tearing it up in the minor leagues in Sugar Land with 13 home runs, 27 RBI with 5 stolen bases so far this season in 25 games. Loperfido will be playing first base, even though he has primarily been in the outfield.
The Duke prospect said that he was informed of his promotion during a road trip in El Paso.
“I got a little emotional telling my parents, just ‘cause they’ve been so supportive of me every step of the way,” he said. “Since I was a little kid,this is what I wanted to do and they’ve worked really hard to let my sister and I pick whatever we wanted to do, and pursue it and be passionate about it. It was awesome to be able to tell them.”
While at Duke, Loperfido was an infielder and outfielder for Duke's squad that went to the postseason three years in a row. He was named a freshman All American in 2019 after batting .315 that year. He was named the 2021 ACC Baseball Tournament MVP leading Duke to it's first ever ACC title in baseball.

According to Brian McTaggart of Astros.com. the Astros are the only team in MLB without a home run by a first baseman. Astros first baseman Jose Abreau isn't getting the job done with a horrible month slash line of .099/.156/.113).
Chandler Rome of the Athletic is reporting that Abreau will be sent down to make room for Loperfido,
At 9-19, anything is worth trying to get this team back on track and used to what Astros fans are seeing: winning games and being one of the top dogs in all of Major League Baseball. With a top prospect like Loperfido on the field, the Astros hope to get the spark they need offensively.
