Treylon Burks Needs To Be Better

Treylon Burks stiff arms Dereck Stingley Jr

Treylon Burks is just another bad pick from Jon Robinson. He was drafted 18th overall by the Titans in 2022. Titans fans have mostly accepted that he won't live up to our first-round investment, but can he have a role in this team with success?

The Wide Receiver Room Is Stacked

The Titans already had DeAndre Hopkins, but this offseason also added Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd in free agency. This leaves Burks as the 4th wide receiver on the depth chart.  The Titans also drafted Jah'Quan Jackson from Tulane. His biggest role for the Titans could be as a return man.

Although, he is just one more wide receiver who appears to have a roster spot. Plus, incumbent Titans players like Kyle Phillips, Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, and Kearis Jackson add to the difficulty.

The Hype Was There, But The Numbers Weren’t

Burks’s rookie season was marred by not being able to cope with the insane humidity in Tennessee. However, he stayed in Tennessee through the offseason last year and showed up to camp in the best shape we had seen.

His production was only about half of what it was in 2022. He ended the 2023 season with only 16 receptions for 221 yards and 0 touchdowns. Derrick Henry had 214 receiving yards last year to put into perspective.

Coaches Praise Burks

Earlier in the offseason we heard high praise from Callahan and Holtz. The latest coach to sing his praises is a little telling. Colt Anderson, The Titans Special Teams coordinator, said that Burks is Big, Fast, and Strong and that he is “Everything that makes up a good football player.”

He also said how Burks will do anything to be on the field. We will find out this season as Burks was seen working as a gunner on special teams at mini-camp.

Where Will Burks Fit This Season?

The biggest thing is he needs to stay healthy. Availability is the most important attribute of any football player. In 2023 Burks Sprained his LCL in a joint practice with the Vikings. Burks went down again during practice before the game against the Bengals. He was out for 4 weeks. Then he sustained a brutal concussion in week 9 which kept him out for 3 weeks.

Since his contract is fully guaranteed, he will be with the Titans through the 2025 season. He needs to be on the field as much as possible, so he fits in best wherever he can.
