Tyler Lockett Could Take Backseat For Fantasy In 2024
Last season, Tyler Lockett was the WR33 in half-PPR formats. He caught 79 receptions of his 122 targets for 894 yards and 5 touchdowns. The last time he was below the 1,000-yard mark was in 2019, and he hasn’t finished outside of WR15 since 2018. The Seahawks offense as a whole did have a down year, scoring 43 fewer points on the season than they did in Geno Smith’s first year taking over for Russell Wilson.
The offense will look to get back on track under new Offensive Coordinator Ryan Grubb. Grubb was the OC for the University of Washington, where he led a high-flying passing attack that featured a high percentage of 3 wide receiver sets. Seattle has arguably one of the best wide receiver trios in the NFL.
Even if Jaxon Smith-Njigba (JSN) takes over this year as the WR2 for the Seahawks, Lockett will see plenty of snaps in this new system. The downside to 3 wide receivers being on the field is there is bound to be a drop in consistency. Last year Lockett had 3 weeks where he was a WR1, 3 weeks as WR2, 2 weeks as WR3, and 8 weeks at WR4. The Seahawks limited JSN to the slot role last year, which allowed Lockett to have a larger snap share than JSN by 16%.
This should have offered Lockett a more stable floor. With Lockett playing this season at 32 years old, he is at risk of facing the age cliff. He’s done a great job at avoiding big hits and staying healthy, but the emergence of JSN feels inevitable. It’s just a matter of when at this point. Lockett’s ADP is sitting at 10.04 overall and WR50 off the board, making him a low-risk option with limited upside throughout the season.
Our consensus projections for in the 2024 season would be: 64 receptions, 736 yards, 5 touchdowns through the air.
