USMNT Qualifies for the 2024 Copa America
The United States lost to Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 away from home. They were outclassed after Sergino Dest got the red for punting the ball away and talking back to the ref. As a result, the U.S. conceded two goals and in one of them, Matt Turner made a horrible goalkeeping mistake. The second goal gave life to Trinidad, but it wasn’t enough to come back. Trinidad lost 4-2 in aggregate and the U.S. qualified to the next round of the Nations League and the 2024 Copa America.
This will be their fourth Copa America appearance since 2016 when Messi scored a beautiful free kick against Brad Guzan to knock them out of the tournament. The United States will be one of the favorites to win the tournament amongst the obvious of Messi’s Argentina and Brazil. They are currently ranked 11th on FIFA’s ranking list for international teams.
The United States has grown a lot since its last appearance. They missed out on the 2018 World Cup and went into a rebuilding process where many veterans were replaced with young talent like Pulisic and Weston McKinney. They have been dominating Concacaf for the past 3 years and no team has come close to their level. Gregg Berhalter changed this team for the better, his impact is not being talked about enough. He has coached them to a CONCACAF Nations League, CONCACAF Gold Cup, and to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup.
They will need to change something because their form as of late hasn’t been the same since the World Cup. There have been a lot of problems inside the team especially the Greg and Gio Reyna situation which started during the World Cup. The indecisiveness to extend Berhalter’s contract to keep on coaching the USMNT. They will not be able to beat South American teams like they’ve been playing against Concacaf teams. We must be honest Concacaf bar three teams do not touch the likes of Uruguay, Colombia, etc…
They do have time to fix things and they will host Copa America as well. The support the fans provide is very underrated, they're capable of bringing their team back to life. This will be a great test for the United States, with their young and talented squad they can possibly make it to the semi-finals of Copa America.
