We Finally Know Why Aaron Rodgers Missed Jets Minicamp

SNY’s Connor Hughes reported Monday night the reason why Jets QB Aaron Rodgers was not able to attend the team’s two-day mandatory minicamp.

It’s been three weeks since HC Robert Saleh told reporters that the four-time MVP would be labeled as an unexcused absence from the final portion of OTAs. Now that we have more clarity about why, does this change how we view his absence?

Where Aaron Rodgers Went Wrong

While I don’t view this situation to be a huge deal, I understand why Rodgers has been receiving some backlash.

The Jets quarterback went on record towards the end of last season stating that the team needs to cut everything out of the building that doesn’t have to do with winning. Then, instead of leading by example, Rodgers misses camp for a vacation.

On the surface, it’s not the best look, especially for Aaron Rodgers who is constantly being held under a microscope. However, this situation does not make me question his commitment to this team and this season.

Before these last two practices, Rodgers had attended every single offseason program, mandatory or not, over the last two seasons. As much as you would like to have had him in the building for the last two days, that has to count for something.

Where The Jets Went Wrong

As for the Jets, when we were told about Rodgers’ absence, we were also told that the team had known about this trip months in advance. That being the case, New York had to have an idea that this news would grow to be more than what they would have liked.

The Jets could have taken the time to think of a few different alternatives when breaking the news. Initially, we were told that it was an “important event,” and now it’s being reported that instead of an event that may have been out of Aaron’s control, we found out that it was a pre-booked vacation.

Lastly, another alternative that the Jets could have taken was to hold the mandatory portion of camp at an earlier date. Since Rodgers gave them advanced notice, this seems like a realistic option that could have lowered the flames to this whole fire.
